What is it?
Kleptomania is an impulse control disorder. This causes an uncontrollable urge to steal. This disorder is rare; fewer than 200,000 people in the USA have it. It is more common in women and the reasons for it are unknown as of yet. The most logical explanation can be a past history of impulse control disorders.
This is a quite serious disorder as it leads to stealing small things that hold little value. These tendencies can cause job loss, law trouble, and more.

Treatment
There is no cure for Kleptomania, however, there is treatment. One simple way is to go to therapy. Going to therapy (such as cognitive, behavior, and psychotherapy) can help curb compulsive stealing.
For medications, there is one called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI). This treats symptoms of depression and anxiety which can be a factor in Kleptomania.

How Well Known is it?
Kleptomania May be known through the popular Sims games since it is a trait available. However, outside of that, I don’t believe many people understand Kleptomania and how it works.
