The author of The Hobbit is J.R.R. Tolkien

or John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. He started

writing The Hobbit in 1930 and the book

was published in 1937. It is actually his

first ever published work!

As a result of its success, Tolkien wrote a

sequel to the story 17 years later, known

as "The Lord of the Rings". You can read

more about that series in this post.

Later, a director from New Zealand,

Peter Jackson, turned the book into a

movie trilogy including the movies

"An Unexpected Journey" (2012),

"The Desolation of Smaug" (2013), and

"The Battle of the Five Armies" (2014).

The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins,

a hobbit, that lives in a hole at Bag End.

A hobbit is a race of small and plump people,

who are half the size of a regular human.

They have furry toes and love to eat and

drink. Bilbo lives a quiet and content life

until the old wizard Gandalf arrives at his

home and persuades him to go on an

adventure together with thirteen militant

dwarves. Their goal is to reclaim the dwarves'

treasure from the dragon Smaug, which

Bilbo is supposed to steal.

They all leave together and are soon

captured by three hungry trolls, except for

Gandalf. He tricks the trolls to stay outside

when the sun comes up, which causes them

to be turned into stone. After the trolls

were dealt with, the group takes some

weapons from the trolls' camp.

ーーーーーーー ーーーーーーー

Their next stop in their journey is the elfish

stronghold of Rivendell. There, the group

receives advice from Elrond, the great elf

lord. Afterwards, they leave to cross the

Misty Mountains, but a snowstorm causes

them to seek shelter in a cave.

Unfortunately, they get captured by a group

of goblins, living beneath the mountain.

Gandalf leads the dwarves out of the

mountains through a age, but they leave

Bilbo behind.

When Bilbo wanders through the tunnels on

his own, he ends up finding a golden ring,

which he puts in his pocket. He takes the

ring and soon meets Gollum, a creature that

lives in the cavern. Since Gollum wants to

eat Bilbo, the two have a riddle contest to

determine Bilbo's fate. Bilbo ends up

winning the contest by asking the riddle,

"What have I got in my pocket?"

Even though he won, Gollum wants to eat

him anyway, so he leaves to get his magic

ring, which can turn the wearer invisible.

But Bilbo has that same ring in his pocket,

so he uses it to escape.

ーーーーーーー ーーーーーーー

As they escape, the group is pursued by evil

wolves or Wargs, but they are saved by a

group of great eagles and Beorn. Beorn is a

creature that can change shape from a man

into a bear.

Together, they enter the dark forest of

Mirkwood but are abandoned by Gandalf,

who needs to take care of some urgent

business. When the dwarves get caught in

a web of giant spiders, Bilbo has to rescue

them with the sword and magic ring. They

manage to escape the spiders, but the

dwarves get captured again, this time by a

group of wood elves. Once again, Bilbo uses

his magic ring to help them escape, and

they soon arrive at Lake Town.

ーーーーーーー ーーーーーーー

Underneath Lake Town sleeps the dragon

Smaug, so they go to retrieve Thorin's

treasure. Smaug ends up revealing his weak

spot, and when Bilbo steals a golden cup

from his hoard, Smaug becomes angry and

leaves to burn Lake Town. But Bard, an

archer, fires an arrow into his heart at his

weak point, which kills the dragon. Lake

Town is still burnt to the ground before he

dies though.

Both the humans of Lake Town and the

elves of Mirkwood ask to receive some of

the treasure as compensation, but Thorin

refuses, so they end up besieging the

mountain. Now that the dwarves and Bilbo

are trapped, Bilbo sneaks out to the

humans in an attempt to bring peace.

The dwarf lord is furious at Bilbo, but

Gandalf reappears to save him just in time.

ーーーーーーー ーーーーーーー

Suddenly, an army of goblins and Wargs

arrives, and the humans, elves and dwarves

are all forced to work together to defeat

them. They almost end up losing, but Beorn

and the eagles arrive to help them win.

Once the battle is over, Bilbo and Gandalf

return to Bilbos' home. Although Bilbo isn't

accepted by the other hobbits anymore, he

doesn't mind, as he now enjoys talking to

elves and wizards more.

Possesses great inner strength, which

Gandalf is aware of. During the story,

he shows courage and initiative.

Bilbo is often torn between his

adventurous side, which he inherited from

his mother's side, and his comfort loving

side inherited from his father. These two

opposing traits cause conflict during the

story.

At the beginning of the book he is quite

cowardly and has to be saved a lot.

But as the story continues he shows his

wit when he tricks Gollum and in later

chapters he goes through challenges that

make him aware of his heroic and brave

side.

The guide for the group and tutor figure

of the protagonist. He is a wise old man

and at the same time very powerful.

At the start of the story he acts as a guide

and parentual figure for Bilbo, which can

be seen when he saves the group from

situations early on. Later on, Bilbo slowly

takes over this role from him.

Thorin Oakenshield

The leader of the dwarves is brave and

intelligent. His character is in strong

contrast to Bilbos' character at the

beginning of the story.

He is the strong leader of the dwarves and

unchallenged at that. Unfortunately, he is

also greedy, as can be seen when he

refuses to share the dragons hoard with

the humans and elves. This fact was a big

reason for the war happening.

Smaug

Antagonist | Dragon

Smaug is isolated from the world and

guards the stolen treasure. He spends

most of his time sleeping on his hoard.

He is also an irrational and evil character,

as seen when he destroys Lake Town.
