Hello everyone!

Oh. My. God. After all this time, we've reached EDITION 10! Thank you so so much. You guys are the reason this group is alive! Y'all keep liking and giving love and this motivates our to do better every time! Loads of hugs and kisses from the DT team.

So I'd told y'all about the "special things" I've planned for the Demigod Times? Well, you'll get to know about them in the end. Our ranter and I had actually planned this whole thing BEFORE edition 1, but it didn't actually happen. That's why, we're doing it now!

I don't know if you've noticed, but we've got a new logo! It's on the TPL and it was made from scratch by moi. I hope you like it because I'm really proud of it! Also, please don't use the logo anywhere else as it is the official Demigod Times logo :copyright: .

And here you go, the usual, boring message- take part in our challenges! The prize is 10 COINS! I'm pretty sure that's a great prize for such a small task. Even though there is no challenge for this edition, keep this in mind for the next one!

Also, this edition was actually going to come out yesterday, that's Halloween, but well.... school sucks.

The Daughters of Aphrodite

Godly parents within the Riordanverse span from the colorful Iris to the bellicose Mars. Some, such as Hades and Poseidon are extremely common among OCs. Conversely, ones like Hypnos and Nemesis aren’t nearly as popular among original character creators. Some of the most unpopular gods and goddesses I find to be Aphrodite and Aries, most likely due to the negative representation of their children within Riordan’s works. Today we will be discussing some of the canon children of Aphrodite in this think-piece (rant) about her daughters, more specifically, Drew Tanaka, Piper McLean, and Silena Beaureguard.

Drew

Let’s start off with Drew, who at least to me, seemed like a pretty one-dimensional character, created as a foil to Piper, as well as to give a link between HoO and TKC. What really confuses me about her is her fan following, with a surprising number of people praising her and making her a central character in their fan fictions and fan arts. Similar to Octavian, she seems to have become an ironic fan-favorite, with plenty of fans eager to create a backstory to if not justify, then at least explain her behavior. As an ironic Octavian fan myself, I understand this desire to give a hated character actions some context for the rest of the fandom. I guess what confuses me is the fact that she is such a minor, throwaway character, she never seemed relevant enough to need context.

Piper

Now let’s consider Piper McLean. Piper has gotten a lot of hate in the fandom for being a bland stereotype and I can’t say I disagree with those who hold this opinion. Piper always gave me the impression of being a boring character. Her most outstanding characteristic is her dislike of herself for no apparent reason. This seems like a way to get the reader’s sympathy for an otherwise unsympathetic character. Her denial of being a stereotype has turned her into one. Refusing to accept her implied fate as an Aphrodite girl has turned her into a cliche rebel without a cause. Almost her whole character is just her thinking she’s a failure, and denying that she’s into anything stereotypically feminine, which also, in my opinion, furthers a common concept that girls who enjoy things that are stereotypically feminine are weak for not standing up to society’s expectations. As for her self-doubt, it always seems so disingenuous because of how powerful she really is, having defeated many goddesses and strong warriors in battle. This makes her struggle not nearly as believable as some of the other characters in the same story. Riordan tries to introduce a more believable struggle in The Burning Maze, however, because he did not provide any intrigue for her originally, it seems pointless to do so now.

Silena

Now we move to Silena, one of my favorite characters in the entire PJO Universe. Unlike Drew, she has clear motives behind her actions, and unlike Piper, she doesn’t perpetuate unhealthy stereotypes for young women. She is both feminine and strong. Unlike most characters, she doesn’t force herself to choose between the two. In contrast to female characters across most media, she can be both strong and kind, when oftentimes, in order for a woman to be shown as powerful in fiction, she has to be rude, hateful, or cruel. When Silena is both comionate and capable, she’s providing a good role model for all people to follow. Even though she ended up being a mole, she remained a likeable, believable character throughout her entire arc defying the stereotypes of what an Aphrodite girl can be.

in conclusion

Lastly, believe that the children of Aphrodite have been done a terrible injustice by having their characters portrayed as boring, predictable and badly written, with one minor exception. Which does not excuse the rest of them. I’ve met multiple people with the same opinion, who agreed they could have been done better. In conclusion, they had some potential and it just didn’t work out which sometimes just happens. But in my opinion these bad characters are a direct cause of the lack of self-proclaimed Aphrodite children within the fandom.

Sometimes, between one battle and another, the Argo II crew had time to rest. Unbelievable, right? During their rest, however, they truly formed their unbreakable bond… and created inside jokes that didn’t last long enough for us to witness.

“Percy. Hazel. Leo. Jason.”

In one not too fateful day, Percy stood in front of the bed in his room. There sat the other three he mentioned, groaning.

“Long ago, the four demigods lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when Leo stole my banana right under my nose,” Percy spoke, green eyes glaring at Leo. Though the son of Hephaestus gulped, usually too scared to stand up to him, this time he clenched his fist and stood up. “Only Jason, our best friend, could return it, but when I needed him most, he chose to stand by Leo’s side.”

“You’re being unreasonable. Leo didn’t steal anything. The entire time the banana was left on the table, he repaired the damages on the Argo from our last fight,” Jason said.

“Yeah, you heard him!” Leo defended himself. “Besides, does it matter? We have endless food.”

“It’s about the principles!” Percy yelled back, his hand arching in front of him. “You can’t just steal from your friends. Right, Hazel?”

“This is dumb.” She shook her head and walked out of the room. Leo followed her.

“Come on, Jason?” Percy pleaded again with his best puppy eyes.

But the son of Jupiter went after the other two.

…

Meanwhile, Frank, Annabeth, and Piper looked out for any venti in the European air. Annabeth held her white sword and Piper tried to make sense of Katoptris’ visions once again. All the while Frank munched on a banana, his body leaning to the bow of the ship.

“Banana?” Annabeth asked at the sight of the fruit.

“Mmmm, found it lying around,” Frank answered with a simple shrug.

…

Hours later, Percy would learn of this as well. For now he remained in an ignorant bliss and slight frustration at the disappearance of the banana.

Hey y'alls, it's me, CC, back with TDT finally!

See I'm not dead you proud of me?

Since there wasn't a theme this time, I decided to submit something I've been playing with mentally for a while, and that is how the characters look. I realize that everyone has their own mental images, but I figured I'd share mine. So, without further ado, here goes!

Percy

Doesn't seem as tall as he is, lanky as heck. Hair as long as Annabeth will let him have it, basically has surfer cut. Inky black hair with a slightly blueish tint. A little stubble, nothing to speak of, shaves it off. A light dusting of freckles that come out for the summer. Eyes change color to match nearest body of water, ranging from vibrant to muted tones of blue, green, and gray. Lives in hoodies. Very hard to distinguish between outfits.

Annabeth

The coolest eyes ever. Like they're pretty big and round and they sparkle when she has an idea she likes, but literally look like the 91stcurcle of hell when she's angry. Also the longest. stinking. eyelashes. Like Piper got mascara on her once and Percy punched like three people before Annabeth stopped him. Also, literally never wears makeup. She just thinks it's too much work. Same goes for hair like it's so beautiful and curly when she takes care of it (usually just before a date) but the rest of the time it's tangled and frizzy or just braided so it's out of her way. Lives in messy buns. Has reading glasses but never wears them unless she's alone. Percy loves them though and tried to get her to wear them more. Toned body. Taller than average but you don't usually notice it.

Grover

Hair is so stinking curly it's cute. Also so many freckles. Like everywhere. Big ears that kinda stick out and he's really insecure about them. Usually has henna tattoos somewhere on him because Juniper's obsessed. They always match. Always wears baggy clothes, literally never dresses up.

Scrawny and lanky as heck.

Jason

Literally looks like a surfer boy. Has that short-on-the-sides, long-on-the-top hairstyle. Always flipping hair out of eyes. Square glasses that never seem to be clean enough. Almost imperceptible freckles. No facial hair. Really tall and muscular, slight tan. Always dresses dressy casual to semi-formal, the most casual he gets is his Camp Jupiter tee shirt and khaki cargo shorts. Was literally so thrilled with his school uniform.

Piper

The prettiest skin tone ever, like literally goals. Kind of a honey brown tone but with a little pink. Also freckles. A lot of freckles. Perfect almond-shaped eyes. They change colors a lot, but always have gold undertones. Also eyelash perfection. Her hair is really short and choppy but she does little braids a lot and the feather clips. Slightly chubby but not too much, just enough to give her a perfect body.

Leo

Short and scrawny as heck. Dark tan, slightly orange skin tone. Dark brown eyes but with a lot of gold and orange undertones. Burn like fire when he's angry, sparkle like stars when he's happy. Perfect hair, same color as eyes, and unruly curls. Naturally crooked mouth, always appears to be smirking. Shirt always half tucked in. Likes wearing workboots but pants get in the way so they're half tucked in too. Also everything ends up a size too big.

Hazel

Also short as heck. Chocolate skin, like really pretty. Pure gold hair that is almost an afro but not quite. Sometimes does cornrows, but not often. Equally gold eyes. Also very scrawny, but has a little bit of curves.

Frank

Tall, muscular, literally almost perfect body. Very short, wide eyes, but crinkle at the corners so he always looks like he's smiling. All rounded features. Really big hands, but not in a bad way. Hair always seems to stick up.

Nico

Very pale, very short, very scrawny. Literally no body hair. Longish hair, always in face, perfectly straight, black as the void. Really pretty hazel eyes if you ever actually get to see them. Natural scowl, but beautiful smile if you ever see it.

Will

Perfect gold hair, cute curls. Perfect tan, lots of freckles. Sky blue eyes, super reflective. Tall, slender. Really bony hands. Always wears plaid.

Reyna

Nearly indeterminable race. Dark brown eyes, nearly black when she's angry. Looks fierce with winged eyeliner. Not too tall, slightly chubby, perfect curves. Almost invisible freckles. Really really long hair, so-brown-it's-black, always braided over her shoulder.

Rachel

Literally Merida's hair. So red, so curly, so unruly. Usually breaks ponytail holders, but has a really fly high ponytail if she can find a scrunchy. If she needs to tie it back, she'll use a bandanna, or use paintbrushes. The biggest, roundest green eyes you'll ever see, crazy eyelashes. Also zillions of freckles literally everywhere. Always has paint on her clothes, especially her shoes. So many tee shirts, all of which have either logos or quotes. Literally owns one pair of shoes (converse) that she replaces when they fall apart, literally covered in paint to the point where you can't tell what the original color was. Wears a lot of plaid. Frequently wears facepaint.
