Metal is a style of music that is most often associated with the male gender. A music genre full of badass men. However, there is also alot of bad ass women in Metal. This post will be about just these women.
OBS. They are NOT ranked. I also want to point out that there are waaay more successful and bad ass women in Metal than just 10 so it was very difficult to choose.
10. Nita Strauss
Why Nita Strauss is on this list, I do not think needs a major explanation. She's an amazing guitarist, played with people like Alice Cooper and called 'The Hurricane' (and her playing lives up to that name).
9. Sonia Anubis
Guitarist and bassist, probably best known for her work in the Heavy Metal band Burning Witches. But she has also played in bands like Sepiroth, Jackal, Ecocide, Shade of Hatred and is today active with the bands Crypta, Cobra Spell and Ursinne. She is a very hard working person for being 21 years old and is a great influence for me personally for several reasons.
8. Avienne Kiuttu
Avienne is without a doubt "known" for her role as a singer in the band Vintersea. She is a very good example of a singer who sounds really brutal on stage but off stage really funny and happy. She is a person who shows that being feminine doesn't mean that you can't also be bad ass.
7. Angela Gossow
Few probably see it as something particularly far-fetched that Gossow is on this list. She was probably one of the first really successful female singers in Extreme Metal. Gossow also shows with her strong stage personality that women can be at least as bad ass as men.
Obs. I could just as easily have chosen White-Gluz but I decided on Gossow for various reasons (and no I do not want to include both. There is simply no room for that).
6. Hanna "Obscura" van den Berg
Something that makes Obscura stand out in this list is that she is the only Black Metal musician. There are few famous Black Metal bands with female and Obscura's band 'Asagraum' is one of them. She shows that women can perform genuine Black Metal just aswell as men.
5. Prika Amaral
Founder and guitarist of the Thrash / Death Metal band Nervosa. She is a really skilled guitarist in her genre and is a great inspiration to me. Prika is also a great example of a woman who shows that women can play Thrash and Death Metal just as much as men.
4. Luana Dametto
Dametto is also "known" as the drummer of Nervosa but left the band and is now active with Crypta. This is one of my biggest role models no matter what gender we are talking about. Dametto is an incredibly good drummer. She is not only playing really fast, she is also playing very hard. What makes her extra cool is that she looks completely unaffected when she plays those super fast blast beats.
3. Fernanda Lira
Hmm can we see any pattern here? Three people in a row from the same band. Most people probably know Lira as a singer and bassist of Nervosa, but she also left the band to found Crypta with Dametto et al. Lira is also one of my biggest idols. Her stage personality is superb and she is one of the most bad ass front men / women I know. Because I have met her myself, I can certify that she is really nice and is perceived as a generally genuine person. Her bass playing should definitely be mentioned, and the fact that she sings at the same time is absolutely incredible.
2. Joan Jett
An icon that has represented women in hard rock since the 70's. Started with the group 'The Runaways' and after that started a successful solo career. I myself am basically raised with her music. I do not even how old I was when I first heard 'I love Rock' N 'Roll'. A great role model simply to this day.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Diva Satanica
Noora Louhimo
Jo Bench
1. Jill Janus
I do not think there is anyone who thinks it is unexpected that she is on this list (or I do not hope so atleast). Without Jill Janus, this list would not be complete. Jill Janus is a huge idol and role model for me for several reasons. Not least for her voice and stage personality but also how she was off stage. She had a real "whatever" attitude to many things, which I find inspiring. She often had a very "sexy" behavior that can be perceived by many as negative. But I see it as her doing it to show that she was comfortable with her sexuality and that women have nothing to be embarrassed about. She herself has expressed that she did not see "sexism" in the genre as a particularly big problem. She is perceived as a person that you dont mess with. Unfortunately, she chose to take her life, IN MEMORIAM

Excellent choices! I’m not sure why, but the majority of the metal musicians that really inspire me happen to be female. Nita Strauss, Angela Gossow, Joan Jett and all the of Nervosa are huge influences on they way I think about music and life in general.
Thanks man. I dont know if most of my idols are female but many of them are
Okay but no Tatiana from Jinjer?
She is awesome but no. As ive pointed out, there are waay more awesome female musicians than only 10

Fair enough
🤘🏻Great list, I like your choices :+1: 🏻Awesome list🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻And yeah there are many more great woman in Metal but like you said, this is your list, and it's a good one :ok_hand: 🏻
Thank you very much🤘
This is a dope list!
I have a ton of respect for Jill Janus, I get that some people dismiss Huntress on of their fame, but she was pretty authentic and a very interesting artist.
Angela Gossow on the other hand... to each their own! And I recognize that institution that she represents. She basically took the female unclean vocals into the metal mainstream, which is both valuable and irable. Regardless, I never enjoyed her as a vocalist, nor as a frontwoman, and even less so as a metal entrepreneur and personality.
I can’t solely fault her for it, there’s just many things about Arch Enemy I can’t stand, but that one dispute they had with the photographer really soured a band I didn’t care for. Oh well.
Yeah that sh*tshow with the photographer was pretty damaging for me too.
Thanks for the post! I just added Nervosa to my playlist featuring Jinjer, Arch Enemy, Burning Witches... 🤘
... and Babymetal :yum:
You're welcome. Nervosa is an awesome band and they where super nice and down to earth when i met them. Babymetal is also brilliant, i could have included Su-Metal or someone in this list. But again aaalot of amazing women are left out

Babymetal wouldn't fit in, they're too kawaii to be badass (^_^)

Yeah but thats kind of the brillians with them. They are cute but at the same time bad ass. That is kind of their concept. I could definetely see them fit in
