Bug hated this.
She had no idea that repairing her pak would take this long. Since it had to be removed from her to do repairs, Zim had attached her to his life-sustaining wires, which hung from the ceiling. They weren’t the best, but they kept her alive, just dangling there by the holes in her back.
Waiting for Zim to be done the repairs was incredibly boring. But luckily, he had allowed Dib to come down into the lab to keep her company. As long as he didn’t touch anything of course, which was a rule Dib didn’t mind following. So instead, he was showering Bug with questions of all sorts about where she had been and what had happened to her.
“You really tried to kill them?” The boy asked, making himself comfy in the chair he was in.
“Unfortunately for me, yes,” Bug replied, kicking her legs around in the air. “I had no idea what I was doing. I guess it was all just built up adrenaline and anger.”
“Well, what happened after that?” Dib looked up at her, his eyes glazed in concern. “I can tell it wasn’t good, judging by the many visible injuries I see you have.”
Bug looked down at her hands. “Well, I had these cool robotic gloves and goggles. After my pak had been ripped off, it sent an electrical current which caused them to explode, hence the burns on my hands and around my eyes. There had also been a ring around my right antenna which had controlled the robotic parts, which, if you couldn’t tell already, had exploded as well. So, bye-bye to most of that antenna.” She flicked the sad stub.
“Will the burns stay there?” Dib reached to examine her one hand, and she could tell he had noticed the worse looking marks around her wrists.
“Well, once my pak is fixed, which is taking FOREVER!” She shouted, glaring at Zim, who responded with an eye roll. “Anyways, once that is fixed, it’ll heal most of my wounds. The burns will be gone, though I can’t regrow my antenna, unfortunately.” She chuckled a little at her own, sad joke.
“What about these marks?” Dib asked, pointing to her wrists. “They look worse than any other marks you have. Do you think they’ll scar over?”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking will happen.” Bug lifted the wrist he wasn’t holding to her face. “These are from tugging on the cuffs I had on in my prison cell. I had struggled so much that they had gone numb at some point.”
The human stared at the floor for a moment, thinking about something. “Zim had showed me a news article about you. You looked so sad in that picture. I almost didn’t recognize you.”
Bug let her hand fall and looked down at him. “I seeing that picture. I hated it. My eyes looked so dull...” She sighed.
“Well, I-“ Dib was interrupted by Zim marching over, declaring how amazingly he had repaired the pak.
“Yes! I have completed it in rather record timing!” The obnoxious irken pulled a lever, which lowered Bug to the ground. “It looks as good as brand new, all thanks to the amazing me!”
The wires in Bug’s back let go of her, and Dib caught her as she stumbled to stand. Her pak basically crawled out of Zim’s hands to reattach itself to her. In moments she already looked much better, more color returning to her skin as her burns began to slowly heal. She felt exhausted, yet full of energy at the same time.
“Alright!” Zim spoke after a few moments. “Now that the needed repairs are completed, I have every right to toss the Dib-human out of here using violent force!” He laughed and reached for a button.
“Wait!” Bug stopped him. “I’ll just walk him home. It’s the least I can do since he waited here with me.” She turned to give the human a smile.
Zim groaned. “Ugh. You and your ‘comion’. Be gone with you both!” He waved his hand as if shooing them away before heading down a hall to a different room. Bug rolled her eyes and led Dib back up to the house part of the base.
“Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said your burns would be healing after your pak was fixed. Parts of them already look better!” Dib was looking right at her face as they walked, seeming to be observing the burns around her eyes.
“Heh, yeah, paks are pretty advanced.” Bug headed towards the front door but froze. “Oh stars, I don’t think I have my disguise anymore.” She sighed, opening the door for him. “I guess you’ll just have to walk yourself home. Good luck with the garden gnomes.”
“Hold on.” Dib reached into his pockets, searching for something. “Aha! Here it is!” He pulled out what looked like a normal watch, but had a dial on it instead of a clock. Bug handed him her wrist, and he attached the thing to it.
“What is it?” She asked, observing the little thing.
“It’s an advanced hologram creator,” Dib explained, reaching to turn the dial. “It creates an advanced human disguise for you. I have been waiting to give this to you for so long... It took forever to make and get right.”
The dial made a little click, and Bug suddenly felt weird. She looked down at herself, and seemed to be wearing a new uniform, colored with shades of purple. She pulled a mirror out of her pak and looked at herself.
At first, she didn’t even realize it was her, but then it started to click. That human in the mirror WAS her. She observed the pale skin tone, the new nose, the ears... but what stayed the same was that old hairstyle of hers. And she LOVED IT! She let out a little squeal, putting the mirror away. “Thank you, Dib! Thank you thank you thank you!” She gave him a sudden hug before doing a little twirl, watching the uniform flow.
“I knew you’d love it,” Dib said confidently. “I just know you too well!”
“Well lets get you home, ‘All-Knowing Dib’,” she mocked, giggling as the two headed out the front door.
Once they arrived at Dib’s familiar home, the two said their goodbyes. As Dib was about to head inside, Bug suddenly grabbed his arm to stop him.
“What?” Dib asked, turning to look at her, a look of confusion on his face.
“Zim interrupted you earlier,” Bug mentioned, letting go of his arm. “I had said how my eyes had looked so dull, and then you were about to say something. What was it?”
Dib froze, and Bug watched in amazement and concern how his face began to change colors. “W-Well I was gonna say how... well...” He took a deep breath before continuing. “I don’t think your eyes are dull. In fact, they still are their very... p-pretty purple.” He stared at the ground awkwardly.
Bug smiled at the compliment. “Aww, thank you! You’re just too sweet!” Dib’s face just seemed to get redder at that. Bug looked up at the sky, which was starting to darken. “Well, I better be heading back. I’ll see you at skool tomorrow!” The happy irken gave Dib one last goodbye hug before skipping off, heading back home to start her new life on Earth.
