The pack of heroes walk swiftly and cautiously with their ears bent in every direction and their eyes sharper than knives, hoping to help anyone who may have been left behind in the smoke and flames.
“Of all times to form an attack, I guess Thanksgiving would be easiest.” Denki says with his voice muffled. The smoke continuing to swirl around wasn’t doing any favors for the hero’s bodies or nerves. “Given that everyone is together and all.”
“I have to agree with you, how sad for those poor families. All they wanted to do was be together.” Uraraka responds. “I know villains are mean, but this was completely heartless.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say. Too bad it didn’t happen closer to the dorms, I would have shown that poor excuse for a team a taste of my fist!” Bakugou exclaims, small explosions exuding from his palm as he walks ahead of everyone else.
“Dude, catch a break once in a while. Everyday doesn’t have to be a fight for safety you know. Calm down.” Kirishima runs up to him looking around while a few of the others cough. “Besides, I know you’re wanting some of the food we had sent along with us. A makeshift dinner will have to do since no one was able to go home this year. Denki’s got the bag secured with him.” Denki smiles as he lifts a small bag filled with wrapped food.
“Kirishima is right you know, the last thing we want is for the league to get any closer to UA. Imagine how many people are trying to have a peaceful meal together yet are terrified above all else, even though they’re miles away.” Jirou says matter of factly as Bakugou scoffs.
“You losers just aren’t as prepared as real heroes like I should be. Every second you have to be prepared to fight.” Everyone sighs. ”It’s not my fault you idiots don’t understand.”
“I hate to break this conversation up, but I think I see someone!” Momo shouts as she sprints in front of the group. “Look at the third story of the building up ahead on your right! There’s a pair of feet dangling out!” The group runs after as they turn their attention swiftly. “Uravity, give me a boost!”
Uraraka darts up front and floats her up high on a huge boulder. She hopes that she can get above the smoke that endlessly swirls around to give Momo a correct, but more importantly, safe entrance. As she brings her fingertips together, Momo hoists herself to the window to the left of the pair of legs dangling too close to the edge, watching as the boulder falls and smashes on the ground.
“I’m going to break through your neighbor’s door and run in there, hang tight!” She hears a young child crying in the room through the screams of the trapped victim. “I’m going in! Bakugou, help me out!” There’s nothing short of a nod seen before explosions are seen and heard below her, leaning directly to her left. “Break that door before I get to them!” The only confirmation received from Bakugou is another round of explosions, expanding the hold that was previously made by the day’s attack. As Momo swings both legs into the window, she could feel Kirishima crawling up the wall.
Seconds and Momo is greeted at the room’s exit with the door blown apart. They exchange a nod before getting to the room next door, meeting Kirishima as they break the door down and run inside.
“I knew some of you would show up.” A man turns with a scarred, stitched smile. “You hero wannabes are too predictable, you know.” As the three stumble back, they are faced with the villain Dabi. The three look past him to see a pair of stuffed pants held down by rubble and a recording tape of a child’s cry. Before they can look back, the room turns blue and Dabi is nowhere to be seen, only heard.
“Think fast!” Dabi yells as his eyes widen and he fills the room with flames. Kirishima jumps in front of the group and shields them as much as possible.
“Someone radio the others down below! I can’t do this long, I’ll melt to nothing!” Voices are panicked and weld together as Kirishima holds his position. Unable to see, they hear Dabi’s voice once again.
“You know, usually heroes can withstand this heat much longer than you three combined! Why don’t you just give up and run back to UA?! We can’t wait to see everyone there you know!” Dabi yells through the blue flames as smoke fills the tight space. “GIVE UP! YOU’LL GET NOWHERE WITH ME! YOU BUNCH OF-”
Dabi’s voice and flames are cut off as the three student’s watch him fall from the windowsill. As he falls, they see Jirou and Uraraka on floating boulders, Denki a distance behind shaking like a chihuahua.
“Guys let’s get out of here now!” Denki’s voice audibly shaky as the boulder he sits on moves closer to the three.
“I heard his steps before he shot the flames,” Jirou says as she looks to the ground. “Uravity brought several other boulders up with us and we managed to hit him just right to stun him out of the window.”
Uraraka nods. “I didn’t hit him perfectly, my hope was to get him unconscious on the ground from the fall, but he’s already gone.” The entire group looks out the window to see a huge puff of smoke in the direction Dabi had run off to. “I think it’s best if we don’t pursue.
“Y-yeah, why don’t we all just get.. back on the ground and di-discuss what to dooo…” Denki trembles as he looks down and grips the sides of the floating boulder he’s sat on.
“Pfft- that Dabi is nothing but a coward!” Bakugou shouts and sticks his head out of the large hole where the stuffed legs used to be, now a pile of ash. “HEY!! Come back and fight me like a MAN!! You coward!!” Bakugou continues to yell. Everyone sighs once more.
“I’m going to set us down, will you three be okay getting down on your own?” Uraraka asks, glancing back at Denki as he sits trembling.
“We’ll be fine.” Momo says. The group breaks back in threes and reconnect at the bottom of the building, shrouded in smoke once more.
“You know, there was a large hill right outside the city.” Denki says slowly as he gathers himself. “Not to brag or anything, but I kept our food nice and safe.” He smiles awkwardly as he holds the bag of food up in the air like a trophy. The team laughs as they silently agree and follow him to the suggested hill. They find a secluded spot and all sit down as they around pieces of cloth wrapped food.
“Out of everything we’ve been through today as a team,” Momo stands up. “I would like to say I am thankful for everyone’s safety.” The team all hold up a piece of wrapped food and go around the circle saying what they are thankful for most.
As the thanks finish up and they all start to eat, they see another large blast of flames shoot up in the sky at the other end of the city.
“You’re joking…” Jirous says in a defeated tone. She starts to stand up before Kirishima pulls her back down.
“I know it’s our job as heroes to stop them, but we can’t continue on our own.” The team looks back at the blue flames as they get smaller and smaller.
“Well it looks like he’s going the wrong way if he’s trying to get to UA from here…” Denki says, trying to ease himself.
“Everyone just keep their heads down. Let’s finish eating and return to the school.” Kirishima says calmly. They all nod and finish their makeshift dinner. Minutes and the flames are no longer in sight. Bakugou lets out a grunt.
“As much as I hate to it it, but he’s right. Everybody head back to the school.” The team gathers the cloth wrappings and bands together closer than when they had arrived. As they return, full of dirt and ash, festivities run smooth as if there was nothing to be afraid of. They’re welcomed back by panic and relief all in the same breath. They disassemble, clean up, and return to the common room where they are begged to tell what happened.
“Tonight, let’s just focus on the family we have here.” Momo grabs a glass and raises it as high as she can. “To UA!”
“To UA!” The students yell back, filling the halls with their resounding joy.
Even if it was only for tonight.
