In this months claws on photography blog I’m going to be going over how to take a good silhouette photo of your pet.

What even is a silhouette?

A silhouette photo is a solid, dark image of a subject (in this case, a pet) against a brighter background. You can see an example of this in the image above.

How to take a silhouette photo

Sunset is the time I would recommend attempting to take silhouette photos as you’ll have a beautiful background and the lighting is good for this type of photo. Twilight can also work well.

First of all think about how you’re going to position your pet. I’m going to use my own two photos below as an example.

When it comes to silhouettes the pet facing sideways and standing is probably one of the best positions as you get to see the whole outline rather than having a lot of features clumped together like in the second sitting photo.

Silhouettes work the best when you can see 100% of the outline so you’ll want your pet positioned up against full sky. You might need to get quite low to take these sorts of photos otherwise the pets legs will look like they’re sinking into the ground as it will blend in with the ground. Here’s an example of that.

When editing it’s possible you might need to bring the shadows down and add a bit of contrast to make your subject truly stand out.

You can take great silhouette photos on both phones and cameras so no need to worry about that.
