Do you when you’d cry over boys? Or whenever you were afraid someone didn’t reciprocate your feelings?

Whether it was your friend, family, or a stranger… their feelings about you always came first.

But just you wait! Cause one day, you’ll reach the age where you first watched Kamisama Kiss, a simple romcom that’ll teach you an important lesson on love!!

If I correctly, I was about 13– y’know, the age where everyone goes through some kind of life changing event. Middle School brought cute boys who’d inevitably break your heart and leave you sobbing on the floor somewhere questioning your self-worth.

You picked up this anime as a recommendation from a friend and watched it without realizing how much it’ll impact your view on relationships.

It starts off silly, making you laugh a couple of times. Then it gets to romance and crushes… your “expertise”, I’d say.

Until it gets to *that* part. That unrequited love part that must’ve hit you like a truck. I clearly how stupidly relatable that scene was and almost felt embarrassed of it. But if you keep watching just a few episodes more, that’s when you’ll hear my favorite part.

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t see me in that way… nothing will change the fact that I have feelings for you. You know why? Because it’s enough.”

This one significant, revolutionary, and life-changing line was able to completely alter the trajectory of my life.

It taught me that just loving someone was enough. That I didn’t necessarily *need* them to reciprocate my love, since the act of “loving” was already so beautiful on its own.

I could love and care for anyone without having to ask for it back. I’m not greedy or obsessed with making everyone around me love me just to feel important.

Once you realize it’s completely out of your power to choose how someone feels about you and give up on the pursuit entirely, you’ll find life’s much calmer.

Focus on yourself, what you do, and who you love. Stop worrying about how others view you, whether they like you, or what they do when you’re not there.

But spoiler warning: that doesn’t make life free of bad people. Ever since then, our life has been filled to the brim with unnecessary drama.

Let’s see, if I were to try and recount them all…

After “Life-Changing Kamisama Kiss” arc, you’ll unfortunately face the canon events: middle school & high school drama, fake friends, discord server drama, MORE fake friends, amino group drama, did I mention fake friends?

Now, you might be wondering, “Wow.. future me, how do you cope with all this?!” I JUST DON’T CARE!! Cause isn’t that what Kamisama Kiss taught me? That it doesn’t matter how they see me? And I can love who I love?

If someone turns their back on me, it’s my choice whether or not to still care about them. After all, some were considered close friends who I’d once felt comfortable enough with to share my darkest secrets. Sure, I might have conflicting feelings about it, but them hurting me doesn’t invalidate any remaining love I still hold for them.

And if I want to hate them? I go for it!! I’ll hold decade-long grudges for all I care.

Most importantly, I do NOT let their perspectives of me get me down. Everyone is the main character of their own life and you might be the villain in some. Like how people can be allergic to your favorite food, not everyone can like you.

Bitter pill to swallow, I know. That’s just growing up; you realize the world doesn’t revolve around you and settle with what keeps you steady.

Oh how I so wish you’d have known all this sooner. Maybe it’d have spared us so much trouble if you just naturally didn’t care about how others perceived you… or if you realized love isn’t a flaw. We’d have a totally different personality trait if that’s the case.

But thanks to the disgustingly dramatic teenage years, you’ll sob a bit more before discovering this yourself.

So if a boy ever makes you cry,

or maybe someone doesn’t like you back— whether it’s friends, family, or strangers—

I hope you know it’s totally okay! You don’t need someone else’s love or validation to be happy. Feel free to keep loving others!
