I started bullet journaling back in August 2016 after randomly discovering it on YouTube. The videos I found had the nicer journals, fancy pens, washi, stamps... I thought the concept was interesting and I needed a planner so I wanted to try bullet journaling. I just didn't want too many supplies, espeically expensive ones, to start out just in case I didn't like it.
Here are the basic things what I started out with:

First and most important, a journal. Any journal can do. It can be lined, dotted, or blank. It doesn't even have to be expensive. My first one (not pictured) was lined, soft covered, and costed $5 (USD). The point is to have something to write in.
Next important supply: a pen. Like the notebook, any pen will do. You just need something to write with. Personally, I like a fine to extra writing gel pen (My absolute favorite it is the Sarasa Multi pen) to write out my planning and journaling for the day. They write smoothly and goes well with my journal's overall aesthetic. But! A regular ballpoint pen always works well!
If you like to set up spreads that have more structure and/or art, I highly recommend using a pencil, eraser, and ruler. I'm a bit picky when it comes to making things straight and even so these are a big must for me!

Extras
Before having a bullet journal, I liked have the following supplies to keep me organized: Colored pens for color coding and stickers I used just a fun "reward". Like if I finished all my tasks for the day, I add a fun sticker. Or I use it for some decorations for the week.
For lines, doodles, and some headers, I use Pigma Micron pens that my sister had given me and did not want from her art classes. This is definitely not required to have but they were handy and free for me.

So those are my bullet journal starter supplies. If you are looking to start bullet journaling, the supplies don't need to be expensive just in case you dont end up liking it. Use whatever you like!
Happy Journaling! :grinning:

Can I just say I really love your ruler
Oh thank you! I love it too! It's small enough to fit my pen case and strong enough that it won't break.
