Have I mentioned how much I love this song?

Characters:

Zoe Murphy

Larry Murphy

Cynthia Murphy

✦✧✦✧✦

Why should I play this game of pretend?

ing through a secondhand sorrow?

Such a great son and wonderful friend

Oh, don't the tears just pour

I could curl up and hide in my room

There in my bed, still sobbing tomorrow

I could give in to all of the gloom

But tell me, tell me what for

Why should I have a heavy heart?

Why should I start to break in pieces?

Why should I go and fall apart for you?

Why should I play the grieving girl and lie

Saying that I miss you

And that my world has gone dark without your light?

I will sing no requiem tonight

I gave you the world, you threw it away

Leaving these broken pieces behind you

Everything wasted, nothing to say

So I can sing no requiem

I hear your voice, I feel you near

Within these words, I finally find you

And now that I know that you are still here

I will sing no requiem tonight

Why should I have a heavy heart?

Why should I say I'll keep you with me?

Why should I go and fall apart for you?

Why should I play the grieving girl and lie

Saying that I miss you and that my world has gone dark without your light? (I can see your light)

I will sing no requiem

Tonight

'Cause when the villains fall, the kingdoms never weep

No one lights a candle to

No, no one mourns at all

When they lay them down to sleep

So, don't tell me that I didn't have it right

Don't tell me that it wasn't black and white

After all you put me through

Don't say it wasn't true

That you were not the monster

That I knew

'Cause I cannot play the grieving girl and lie

Saying that I miss you And that my world has gone dark

I will sing no requiem

I will sing no requiem

I will sing no requiem tonight

Oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh

Larry's Part

Though Larry might have a smaller part in this song (along with Cynthia), that doesn't mean that it's not important. I believe that Larry is saying that he tried his hardest to get Connor help and to help him, but Connor never really showed any signs of improvement and continued with the arguing, hence 'I gave you the world you threw it away.

As for the 'Leaving these broken pieces behind you', I believe he's hinting towards the hurt Connor had caused everyone, alive and dead. Along with 'Everything wasted, nothing to say', meaning that all the help Larry had tried to give Connor was for nothing in end. Which, in the end, lead to Larry's last solo verse 'I will sing no requiem' because he felt that Connor chose to deny everything that he ever did to help.

Cynthia's Part

In Cynthia's line 'I hear your voice and feel you near', she believes this because she is in Connor's room and it's almost as if he's speaking through Evan's letter, making him feel closer. As well as finally understanding what Connor had felt like, or at least, that's what it seemed like. Which goes into 'Within these words I finally find you'. All Cynthia wanted to do was understand Connor, and now it felt like she's understanding him.

'And now that I know that you are still here', that also ties into it seeming like Connor is speaking through Evan's letters. This ultimately leads to 'I will sing no requiem tonight', because she feels like that's not what Connor would want her to do.

Zoe's Part

In the beginning, her first few lines are like a bitter-sweet note to everyone around her, and what they expect of her. Zoe's mindset is 'He may be dead, but that doesn't make him a great person', as seen throughout the first act of the show, like when she snapped at her mother about being The Brady Bunch. Which could also go with the second section of lines, not seeing the point in grieving.

When Zoe gets to the chorus, it's directed towards Connor. She doesn't want to match up to what people are saying that she should feel, because they don't know what happened behind closed doors.

When it gets to 'Because when the villains fall, the kingdoms never weep', referring to Connor as the villain. She needs another way to show how she's feeling, and by saying this it can give people a more clear image. And now that Connor is gone, she doesn't feel as if she should mourn.Which leads into the rest of the verse and that people really have no idea how Connor treated her, and that it's really no different then when from a villain dies in a movie. Because realistically if Thanos died, a lot of people aren't going to mourn.

The next verse is Zoe growing angry over the fact that she may actually feel terrible about Connor's death and she wants to reassure her. It's mentioned that Connor may have verbally abused Zoe, so the fact that she's showing signs of remorse is ridiculous in her mind. She thinks that Connor was a terrible person, and she just wants confirmation. All in all, I believe that she is upset at herself for having doubts that Connor was a terrible person.

All in all, this is showing how people will react differently to this. Larry feels like everything he did was for nothing, Cynthia is feeling like she may now start being able to understand Connor, and Zoe is upset at both Connor and herself. I love this song, because you see the same situation from three different points of view, showing that no one is the same.

Please, this is my opinion and what I believe the song is about. If you have something to add or just a different opinion in general I would love to read it in the comments!
