Alana's parents were never into the New Years kiss thing, parties, or taking Alana out to go see fireworks. Of course, that didn't stop her from going to her window at night to watch them. Right now, little seven-year-old Alana would be pretending to sleep until it was midnight, but there was arguing going on from the kitchen.

Alana moved out of her bed, setting her feet into her monkey slippers to walk across the cold floor. She quietly opened her door and walked out, now hearing her parents more clearly. Alana quickly moved the kitchen corner and peaked her head out to see what all the yelling was about.

"I can't do this anymore, Daniel. I've taken enough of this bullshit! I deserve a better life than to just be cheated on!"

Alan tilted her head, confused. Her dad was cheating on her mother? That's not how relationships were suppose to go, right? This isn't like Disney Channel.

"I know why you don't come home late at night! But at least have a little more common sense and don't screw one of my friend's sister!"

Slap

Alana covered her mouth as she saw her father raise his hand and smack her mother across the face. This wasn't how it was suppose to go, right? No, parents weren't supposed to fight like this, right?

"You stupid little bitch, how dumb do you think I am? I'm not some idiot! I HOPE Alana can hear you right now so she can hear how ridiculous you sound! And I hope she's fucking laughing!"

Alana quickly faced away from the scene and hid behind the drapes near a window. Then, she heard someone stomp to the master bedroom and slam the door. She was almost certain it was her father.

Alana stepped out from behind the drapes and finally went around the corner, seeing her mother grabbing a suitcase, facing away from her. The woman put her hand on the door handle, twisting it open. "What an asshole." She muttered under her breath, oblivious to the child.

"Mommy, what are you doing?"

The woman's heart dropped as she heard those words split through the air like a knife. She turned around, facing a crying child. "Alana, baby, I'm so sorry... I just- mommy needs to go for awhile, okay? But I'll be back." She let go of her suitcase.

Alana sniffled, forcing herself to stop crying. "When are you coming back?"

"I'll call on your birthday."

"When are you coming back?"

"I'll send letters and-"

"When are you coming back?" Alana almost was yelling at this point, refusing to look at her mother.

"Alana I-"

But, Alana didn't seem to hear her. Instead, she was focusing on all the promises her mother wouldn't be able to keep. She promised to take Alana to Disneyland in the summer, she promised Alana that when she turns eight she can have a puppy, she promised Alana that for her sixteenth birthday there could be a Disney themed party, but most importantly, she promised Alana that she would always be there for her.

"Fine, leave, I don't care." Alana choked back sobs, refusing to let out another tear. Then, she felt like someone was hugging her. Her mother.

"I'm so sorry, Alana. Please, forgive me, maybe not now, and maybe not for a year, but forgive me. You're such a strong and bright girl, even for being seven. You'll do great things in this world. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I love you, I really do." She planted a kiss on Alana's forehead and let go, turning around and walking back to the door, and picking up her suitcase once again.

Alana stared at her mother, softly waving to her, despite the woman not turning around. Then, the woman stepped outside and the door was closed. "I love you, mom." She knew her mother wouldn't hear her, but Alana wanted her to.

Alana turned around, and walked back to her room, shutting the door behind her. She glanced at her digital Hannah Montana clock, which read 11:59. She walked to the window, pushing back the curtains. She couldn't see her mother, since her window was showing the backyard.

Despite the absence of a person, when the first firework went off it was still beautiful. The colors lit up the sky, bringing the small girl a bit of joy. She fiddled with her hair, watching all the explosions of color.

"I know what I want my New Year's resolution to be mom," Alana sniffed, letting a few tears fall down her face "I want to make you proud enough of me to come back home."
