Mearas means "horses" in Old English. Its singular form is "mearh"

Mearas were a breed of wild horses in the north of Middle-earth. They sur normal horses in intelligence, speed and strenght. According to lore, the ancestores of the Mearas where brought from the west by Oromë.

The Mearas are the descended from Felaróf, who was tamed by the first King of Rohan, Eorl. They would later become the mounts of the King of Rohan and would bear no one expect the Kings of the Mark and their sons.

During the TA Mithrandir was given consent to ride on Shadowfax, Lord of the Mearas. Shadowfax continued to accompany Mithrandir throughout the latter half War of the Ring. He was also present on the Grey Havens when Mithrandir sailed to Valinor.
