Epilogue: Goodbye

Dib walked into Ms. Bitter’s classroom with a smile on his face. He was excited to see Bug and tell her about a haunted house he had found the other day. But that smile quickly faded when he saw Zim in his seat, but Bug not in hers. He was about to ask Zim where she was, but he was playing with a sharp pencil so Dib decided to wait till after class. He sat down in his own seat to prepare himself for another useless lesson, when he noticed a letter written in Irken writing sitting on his desk.

“What do you want, Stink-Boy?” Zim asked. Dib had sat down next to him at lunch, which he definitely would never do again.

“I found this note on my desk,” Dib explained, pulling the paper out of his pocket. “It’s from Bug. It says-”

“Hey!” Zim interrupted, snatching the paper from his hands. “This note is written in Irken! How could you possibly know what it says?!”

“Just shut up and listen!” Dib took the note back and read it out loud: “‘Glasses-Boy, by the time you are reading this I am already gone. I have set out to rid the Irken Empire of its selfish leaders and take over and fix everything. I hope to come back to see you and Zim sometime this week. I need to talk to him. I hope you both are back to your shenanigans. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine. Squintz, Bug.’ Squintz? What does-”

“She’s not coming back,” Zim said. Dib shook his head.

“What? But she said in her letter-”

“She’s not coming back, Dib-worm.” He pulled out a hologram device and it lit up, showing the picture of a beaten up Irken with a news headline that read: “Thought Dead Planet Converter Caught Attacking Tallest”. Upon closer inspection of the image, Dib realized that that sad alien was Bug. She was missing an antenna and had burn marks on her hands and around her eyes. He stared at the picture in disbelief.

“That can’t be her,” he looked away from Zim’s futuristic newspaper and stared at the note in his hands.

“Oh, but it is.” Zim took a sniff of the food in front of him and gagged. “I had to break the news to GIR this morning about how her robot met a… fiery fate. Heard they sent her to Moo-Ping 10. I’ve sent a few creatures there myself. Costs a lot.” He put his device away and looked at Dib. “That note, it said something about how she wanted to talk to me. Any ideas of what about?”

“No clue.” Dib took a bite of his lunch. How could that monster be taking this news so easily?

Later that night, Dib sat on his roof and stared at the stars. How far away is Moo-Ping 10? He took out the note and ran his fingers along the ink letters. His thumb suddenly brushed against a small bump in the paper. He ripped it open to reveal a small flash drive wedged inside. He took it out and opened his briefcase, pulling out his laptop. He stuck the drive into the computer and a file popped up called “DIB: THE PROFESSIONAL PARANORMAL INVESTIGATOR”. He clicked on the file and a bunch of images popped up, with a note right above them.

“‘Here you go,’” Dib read aloud. “‘Hopefully these pictures will get your dad to realize that aliens are real.’” He clicked on the images and there were five of them. Four were pictures of Zim and his evil robot out of disguise, and the other was a picture of Bug, smiling and sticking her tongue out for whatever camera took the picture. Dib smiled and closed the laptop, packing it away and running down to his room.
