    Here's my blog for the lan-

    guage club!! I was going to

    do it in spanish but I finally

    decided to do it in my other

    mother   language, catalan!

    Since    less   people   know

    about     this     language     I

    thought it would be more

    interesting   :) Catalan is a

    language that is spoken in

    Catalonia, an   autonomous

    community in Spain.

- you :: tu

                           "Tu" is the literal translation

                           of the word "you". However,

                           as you can see, it doesn't

                           appear in the translated sen-

                           tence. This is because it is

                           added inside the verb and

                           it's not necessary to write it.

- don't need to :: no cal que

                           The direct translation would

                           be "no necessites" and the

                           verb      conjugation     would

                           change but it sounds weird.

                           We   don't really use it this

                           way.   "Cal que"   is a much

                           more   common way to ex-

                           press     necessity     and    it

                           sounds more natural. If we

                           add   the   "no" in   front we

                           make it negative.

- answer :: responguis

                           The verb answer is "respon-

                           dre" and in this sentence it's

                           conjugated   in   the   second

                           person (you) of the present

                           subjunctive tense.

- quick :: ràpid

                           This is a direct translation. In

                           Catalan we have written ac-

                           cents on some words depen-

                           ding on where the tonic sy-

                           llable is in a word. In this case

                           the   word   is separated like

                            this: rà + pid. The tonic sylla-

                           ble   is rà   and because it's

                           stressed in the penultimate

                           syllable and the word doesn't

                           end in one of the twelve ter-

                           minations (-vowel, -vowel + s,

                           -en, -in) we put a written ac-

                           cent on the a.

           pronunciation

        I'm not too sure how to explain

        the pronunciation. The sounds

        in   catalan are   quite different

        from those in english, especial-

        ly in the case of the vowels. We

        have some vowels that are very

        strong when they're the tonic

        ones and others that sound like

        they are being dragged. This is

        the case in "responguis". The

        first e is   very low and weak,

        whereas the o is super strong

         and emphasizes the word. The

        r, when written in the beginning

        of the word is really strong as

        well, whereas if it was written in

        the middle it would be softer.

        I transcribed the sentence to the

        IPA (International Phonetic Alpha-

        bet) so you can have a better un-

        derstanding of how it's pronounced.

        This may not be entirely correct be-

        cause I studied this a long time ago

        at school and I don't really remem-

        ber much hshshsh

                           Just like before, you don't

                           really   say   the "you". You

                           could   say "tu ets" and it

                           would be correct but it's un-

                           necessary   and   it   doesn't

                           sound as natural. "Ets" is

                           the   second person of the

                           present tense of the verb

                           "ser" (be).

- mine :: meu

                           In Catalan we write mine dif-

                           ferently depending if its mas-

                           culine or feminine. "Meu" is

                           masculine and "meva" is fe-

                           minine.

- anyway :: de totes maneres

                           I really do not know how to

                           explain this one, there is no

                           other way to translate it. As

                           you can see the word "mane-

                           res" doesn't have an accent,

                           even though it's the penulti-

                           mate just like in "ràpid". This

                           is because it ends with one

                           of the twelve terminations,

                           in this case -vowel + s.
