Hello and welcome back to the
galaxy, I’m your host and journalist
leader, Theodore. Today, I’m back
with another edition of the #takeover
series. For this post I’ll be going
over invasive species in Asia. Let’s
get right on into it.

Lantana is native to the American
tropics. It’s known to spread
quickly and can grow in a range
of different ecosystems, making
it hard to get rid of once’s it’s
invaded.
Mainly, the biggest issue with this
plant is that it’s toxic towards
livestock. Because of its fast
reproduction rate, lantana can
quickly beat other plants, reducing
diversity in nature, but also
stumping growth within farms.

Water Hyacinth are native to South
America. While they’ve become
natural in other places over time,
in most other places they are
considered invasive. Some have
nicknamed it “terror of Bengal due
to its invasive nature.
These plants can quickly cover
not only the surface of lakes and
ponds, but under the water as
well. Water Hyacinths reproduce
quickly, causing fast spreading in
just a matter of time. After dying,
the plant sinks to the bottom of
the water source, adding just
another layer of pollution. To
make matters worse, in some
cases the plant has been known
to dry up small ponds due to its
high evapotranspiration rates.
This also causes them to drain
oxygen from the water, resulting
in mass fish death, and the death
of other living creatures in the water.

The Common Snapping Turtle
is native throughout America,
ranging from the southeast of
Canada, down to the Rocky
Mountains, and towards Florida.
The turtle was introduced in
Japan in the 1960s among an
era of exotic pets.

The Common House Gecko is
native throughout south and
southeast Asia. However, it’s
invasive towards tropical Asia.
The biggest issue with them is
the risk of parasites and diseases
being spread. They do well in a
range of environments as well,
causing the number to increase
quickly. For the most part, they
tolerate other geckos, though
will attack if threatened or
otherwise necessary.

The Common Carp can be found
throughout Europe and Asia.
While being considered near
extinction by the IUCN, the fish
is also on the list for world’s 100
worst invasive species. Because
there was no nature predators in
different areas the carp was
introduced to, it was able to
reproduce quickly. In these areas
the carp destroyed large amounts
of vegetation, causing damage to
the lives of ducks and fish native
to the area.

The Largemouth Bass is native
throughout America. It’s mainly
been introduced to other areas
around the world due to its
popularity as a sport fish. In many
areas, it’s caused extinction of
certain fishes due to not having
natural predators where it’s being
introduced.

The Spiraling Whitefly is a fly
which sucks white sap from plants.
It’s native to Central America and
the Caribbean. The fly itself has
caused major issues with killing
crops as it weakens the plants
leaves and inevitably kills it.
Because of secreting honeydew,
it’s believed that ants, bees and
wasps may protect the fly from
predators.

The Buff-Tailed Bumblebee is native
to Europe. These bees are huge
pollinators, competing with natural
ones anywhere they aren’t native
to. In Japan they often beat the
natural pollinators. Because
pesticides can cause issues to both
plants and native pollinators, it’s
often unlikely this can be used as
a means to stop the bumblebees.

Thank you all for tuning in, I hope
you all enjoyed. Unfortunately,
that’s all I have for you today. I hope
you all have a good day/night and
I’ll see you all again soon. This has
been Theo, now, tuning out.
