Grey as neutral

The main emotion related to Grey, is basically nothing. Grey is a neutral color, which tends to be emotionless, empty. It is quite tern, almost boring. In neutral, there is a sense of balance, therefore, grey is seen as a balanced color. Since it is so neutral, it can be seen as formal. Why so? Well something formal usually doesn't have a straight opinion, it is neutral, like a judge, as an example. We can also qualify grey as dull because of it's neutrality.

Grey as sad

Because of its darker tones, and for it to be a mix between black and white, grey can also be linked to sadness, depression, and can be associated to a loss. Since grey contains a bit of white, it's emotional intensity is less intense than black. We could almost say that it's a chaotic neutral. Grey contains less negativity than black, in darker tones, but can also become a happy color in the lighter tones, since it's closer to white.

Overall, grey is associated with no emotions, or to a light level of negativity. It all depends on the tone that it takes!

Masculine or feminine?

Is grey more of a masculine or feminine color? Well, it all depends on the tone, once again. If it's right in between black and white, then it will simply be neutral. Darker greys show more masculinity, while lighter ones are more feminine, since it is softer. This is a generalization, however, and it does not apply to everyone.

Age

When we get old, our hair turn grey. For this reason, the grey colour represents maturity and responsibility because of its association to older people.

Silence

Grey is technically not a colour, which already removes some brightness to it. The thing is that it is not black, nor white. Black shows a big strength and is full of intensity, while white is bright and full of life. What about Grey? It is neither. That makes it a pretty quiet color, it doesn't speak to us. That's mostly why it can be associated to silence. Some people can find it comforting, while others can find it disturbing. That makes it a really unsettling color and not much people enjoy it.

What makes grey such a disturbing color? As I've previously stated, grey is actually an "in-between". It's not black, nor white. It's perfectly balanced between the two, which makes it undefined. Humans crave for knowledge, we want to know! When something is in-between and undefined, we say that it's a liminal situation. We're scared and frightened of the unknown, because anything is possible there. That's why grey can be such a disturbing color.

Note that those are all achromatic greys. There is cool greys and warm greys, which contains shades of blue red or green. We also have the off-greys which are greys that are close to being achromatic, but still contain a bit of color.

The rain falls down,

Painting the sky into grey.

It won't change in any way.

Emptiness fills a void,

Leaving nothing but a bigger one.

Don't let it get to you,

Or it will drown you too.

Let the water stream down your face,

Don't say a thing, accept your faith.

An umbrella might stop the rain,

But it won't stop the empty hole to grow in your brain.

And let the wet drops paint you in grey too.

Crayola crayons

The grey Crayola crayon appeared in 1984. After that, more shades of grey have been made, but most of them have been removed. Then, Blue grey was discontinued, as well as seven more colors.

Einstein

This one is a fact that I found very interesting. Apparently, Albert Einstein was only wearing grey suits all the time because he said that he didn't want to waste brainpower on choosing an outfit everyday. That's kind of funny!

Gardening

Plants with a silver foliage absorbs the light and adds a bit of drama to your garden.

Artwork

Adding grey to a painting or drawing softens the piece, if it contains vivid and bright colors. It makes it soothing to watch. However, when there is too much of it, in an artwork, it can turn it into a tern and boring one, or a depressing one. Grey should carefully be used!
