How to Dye Your Hair!

I've been dying my hair for four years now and I thought it would be nice to go into my typical hair dying routine and such! I know a lot of people go into hair dying kind of blind aka they don't know what they're doing but I'll try to simplify everything for you.

I had my sister help me with the majority of my hair dying sessions, but I've done it myself too. I've mainly used a brand called Splat and I just started using another brand called Manic Panic, specifically the color green envy to start off. When you go to the store and buy a box of Splat hair dye, you get the bleach and gloves along with it.

Manic Panic only comes with just a small container of hair dye. I've never used bleach with Splat/Manic Panic but the colors came out pretty good and lasted a good while. The only downside is that Splat is a one time use whereas Manic Panic you can keep reusing the small container.

First thing you want to get out is some Vaseline and spread it behind your neck, near the hairline, and behind and on top of the ears. This will stop the hair dye from staining your skin. Wearing gloves will protect your hands from getting hair dye on it so be sure to get gloves before you start applying the dye. I prefer to not bleach my hair because my hair is already messed up enough as it is, not due to hair dye but because it's just awful. Anyways, before you apply the dye I recommend having a trash bag near you to throw away the gloves/dye box and perhaps a phone timer so you can track how long the hair dye has been settling in your hair.

Start by applying the hair dye and pretend you're shampooing your hair, make sure you get the dye everywhere such as your sideburns and hair on your neck. Depending on the brand, there are various times to leave in hair dye. Most of the time you only need to leave it in for 30 minutes because after a certain amount of time it stops doing anything to your hair and just basically sits there. I recommend putting something over your head to make sure you don't put hair dye on any objects around the house, like the couch.

After a certain amount of time has gone by, it's now time to wash your hair! Everyone's hair is different so use whatever shampoo/conditioner you prefer. You WILL see hair dye going everywhere once you get your hair wet, be sure to immediately push all of the hair dye water down the drain so it doesn't just sit there and stains the shower/tub. If you do stain it, there are multiple options towards cleaning the stains away. I've personally used a bunch of bleach and whatnot. It's no big deal if you accidentally get dye on your actual skin, be sure to wash it off with soap and if that doesn't work then try rubbing alcohol.

You will most likely get your pillows dirty w/ hair dye but it's honestly not a big deal since you can just wash it out. After you're all done washing out your hair dye, be sure to show off your hair! If you've ever dyed your hair before, show me some pics/tell me what colors you've used!

To get you an idea of what to expect: here are my results. I used both green and pink hair dyes from Manic Panic.
