The S Foundation is a fictional

secret organization standing for

”Special Containment Procedures.”

The foundation is documented

through a real-world collaborative

wiki, and includes elements of horror,

science fiction, and urban fantasy.

The foundation originated on

4chan in 2007, when an anonymous

posted the first ever story. Soon

after that, many additional stories and

“Ss” were written within the same

universe, and a standalone wiki was

created by January 2008. The original

wiki hosting service used was

EditThis, however the site did not

allow s or the ability to

delete posts; it also lacked a central

forum for discussions. In July of 2008,

the Wiki was transferred to Wikidot,

which includes many features, such

as: article lists, keyword searches, a

news hub, and a discussion form.

The new wiki is carefully moderated

by several staff teams and requires

-verification before a post can be

made. There’s also an upvote system,

wherein content that receives too

many downvotes, is removed.

The S Foundation has been the

inspiration of many works and

adaptations over the years. Some of

these works include: novels, comics,

live performances, short films, and

video games.

Regarding the fictional world itself,

the foundation is a secret society

consisting of “S files,” or scientific

documents reporting the existence of

unexplained phenomena. These are

referred to as Ss or simply,

“anomalies.” The anomalies are

creatures, locations, or objects that

possess supernatural properties and

pose a danger to society. They

remain hidden from the general

public however, to prevent mass

hysteria.

When an anomaly is discovered,

Foundation agents, called the Mobile

Task Force, are sent out to collect it

or keep it contained at the source

location. They will also clear all

recollection of the anomaly from the

general public, if needed. Once

contained, they are studied thoroughly

by Foundation scientists.

In the reports, Ss are given an

identification number and a containment

class. They then feature the procedures

for containment as well as dome safety

precautions. They also often come with

proof of the anomaly, such as pictures

and related data.

The universe lacks a central canon but

many of the stories are linked together

in various ways, to create smaller,

cohesive groups of canon.
