.╭──࿎࿎─ ︿︿︿︿︿︿ . . .
Hatsu poked at the food on his plate absentmindedly. Every once in a while, the chopsticks would scoop up a bite, and he'd chew it slowly. As always, the dining hall was packed full of students. For the most part, everybody sat with their respective classes. Even though there were no rules as to who could sit where, nobody was willing to venture outside of their friend group. Hatsu was seated at the end of his table, across from Midoriya. And since Midoriya was there, so was Iida, Uraraka, Todoroki, and Tsu. Their chatter drolled on in the background, unaware that he wasn't listening to a single word they were saying. He usually wasn't one to participate in conversations regardless; they probably wouldn't notice the difference.
He didn't mean to stare. If anybody noticed, he would seem creepy. And yet, his eyes followed an individual over where class 1-B was sitting. Neito Monoma. It was undeniable that Monoma's attitude toward Hatsu's class was quite hostile. He saw Class 1-A as his rivals and was quite expressive about it. And yet, when he was around his class, his attitude was completely different. Even if Kendo was considered the elder sister of the class, Monoma seemed just as nurturing. You wouldn't guess it from the way he treated Class 1-A, but he was very ive of his class. Even now, during lunch, Hatsu watched him laugh with his classmates, despite being unable to hear them over the sounds of the room.
"Hatsu?" Tsu's voice broke through his reverie. Startled, Hatsu quickly looked at her, realizing they had said something to him. All five of them were looking at him expectantly.
"Sorry, what?" he said, not hiding the fact he hadn't been listening at all.
"Jeez, you're always daydreaming," Uraraka laughed. "I don't think you would have even noticed the fire alarms going off."
"He's been staring at Monoma," Todoroki revealed. Hatsu's face blanched, and he stared at the heterochromatic classmate beside him.
"Monoma?" Uraraka asked, her eyes going wide and a mischievous smile growing on her lips. "Ooh, does someone have a crush?"
"Isn't Monoma a little...insane, though?" Tsu asked, sounding slightly concerned. As if getting involved with Monoma would put Hatsu at risk.
"Now now, everybody has their taste in people," Iida chimed in. "I'm sure Monoma, as with any other human being, has his good qualities. I'm happy for you, Hatsu."
Hatsu reared back in his seat in protest. "Wait, wait, that's not it at all!" he said, maybe a bit too loudly. A couple of other students glanced at him, then quickly lost interest. "I...I'm not even into guys. I was just...staring off into space as I thought. You know what it's like to be caught staring at somebody without realizing you were staring, right?"
With a few more giggles and prods, the others eventually dropped the subject. If it didn't seem suspicious, Hatsu would have sighed in relief. He didn't like the look in Uraraka's eyes, however. She was looking at him from the corner of her vision with a mischievous gleam. Hopefully, she wouldn't try anything embarrassing.
Luckily, the rest of the day ed without incident. Hatsu returned home to his aunt, did his daily routine, and woke up the next morning to do the same thing. He was sure the others had forgotten about the incident yesterday, so he was determined not to slip again. Surely they would it as an accident if he didn't bring it up.
Unfortunately, things didn't go that smoothly. Hatsu sat across from Midoriya as usual and started eating, but noticed Monoma wasn't at the 1-B table. But, that was irrelevant. Why would he even see that? He stared intently at his food, eating quicker than usual. He didn't even notice when a figure stood at the end of the table. It took a feminine cough for him to look up. He was expecting Uraraka or Tsu, but instead, a redhead stood before him. And behind her...was Monoma. The color drained from his face.
"Hi, I'm Itsuka Kendo," the woman introduced herself cheerfully. "This is Neito Monoma. We're students from Class 1-B. We were wondering if we could sit with you today?"
"Wait, what?" Monoma protested. "I don't know why you wanted to talk to them, but I came anyway. Why do you want to sit with them?"
"Huh? Oh, I mean, we're all gonna be heroes one day, right?" Kendo asked. "It would be a good idea to make alliances early, don't you think?"
"Alliances with them?" Monoma scoffed. "We don't need them to be heroes. Besides, the table is full."
"Oh, that's fine," Uraraka chimed in. "Deku and I were about to go to study for a quiz. You can have our seats."
"We have a quiz?" Midoriya asked cluelessly.
"I heard Mr. Aizawa and All Might talking about a pop quiz," Uraraka insisted. "Come on, let's go."
"Wait," Iida called. "If you know of an pop quiz, you should warn the rest of the class as well. Also, allow me to study with you."
Uraraka's face looked annoyed. "Yeah, right, okay," she said. "Um, I'll do that, then I'll meet you and Deku in the hallway, okay?"
Iida seemed satisfied with this plan. He, Midoriya, and Uraraka all scooted out of the table, heading separate ways. "So, is it all right if we sit here?" Kendo asked again. Unable to speak, Hatsu nodded like a dumbass. Kendo sat across from him but scooted over so Monoma could sit next to her. And there Hatsu was, face-to-face with Monoma. He was vaguely aware of Todoroki watching him closely.
"So, what's your name?" Kendo started the conversation. Monoma didn't seem too keen on talking with anybody from Class 1-A. Hatsu glanced back and forth between the two, finally settling his gaze on Kendo. With a deep breath, he was finally able to reply.
"Itaihatsu Yawaraka-Nai," He replied. "Um, you can just call be Hatsu for short. Yawaraka-Nai is kinda long, but just Yawarka sounds a lot like Uraraka, and that could cause confusion since I have another classmate named Uraraka. She was the one who was talking about the pop quiz..." He trailed off, realizing he was rambling. That was odd. He rarely rambled.
"It's nice to meet you, Hatsu," Kendo smiled. There was silence for a second, and she elbowed Monoma in the ribcage.
"What? Oh, yeah, likewise," he said begrudgingly, staring only at his food. "Meeting anyone from 1-A is always an honor." His tone was dripping with sarcasm.
It fell silent again. Hatsu felt something swell up in his chest. He didn't want this awkward silence between them. There had to be something they about which they could talk. This whole scenario was a perfect chance to leave a good impression with Monoma. And Kendo, of course. Everything wasn't just about Monoma, that would be absurd. "What are your quirks?" he blurted out. It was a dumb question; he already knew. But they didn't necessarily know that he already knew.
"I can make my hands real big," Kendo explained simply, then looked at Monoma expectantly.
"I can copy other people's quirks," he said. "Fight fire with fire, y'know?"
"That's cool!" Hatsu said, almost too soon. "I can just make fireworks with my hands. Wh-What are some cool quirks you've copied?"
Kendo wore a smile on her face as Monoma answered. She shifted her position to remove herself from the conversation nonverbally. There's no way she just came here to introduce Hatsu to Monoma, surely? "Well, the coolness of the quirk depends on how you use it. I can make any quirk cool," Monoma established. "But one of the most powerful ones I've copied is Bak...is Setsuna's. There are so many ways to use her quirk; it's insane. Not as versatile as any of your classmates' quirks, I'm sure."
"What is her quirk?" Hatsu asked curiously.
"She can break her body into several different pieces and control them telekinetically," Monoma said proudly. Hatsu realized he was bragging. He was showing off his classmate's unique quirk. His hatred toward 1-A wasn't just out of spite. He truly believed his class was better than Hatsu's. Hatsu found himself smiling. "What's so funny?"
"Nothing," Hatsu assured him. "It just sounds like your class is impressive."
Hatsu wasn't sure, but it looked like Monoma was blushing. "Well, of course. I'm glad somebody's noticed."
Just then, the bell rang, surprising Hatsu. Had the entire lunch period already gone? But he had just started the conversation. Kendo looked a little upset as well. "Hey, Hatsu," he said, turning toward him. "If you want, you could sit with us tomorrow."
"I could?" Hatsu asked incredulously. They both looked toward Monoma as if they needed his permission. He seemed a little pensive.
"As long as you don't bring anybody else from 1-A, I don't care," he decided. "It'll also let you see just how impressive my class is."
The rest of the day went by in a blur. So did the next morning, as he thought about what he could talk about with Monoma. He soon found himself sitting at the class 1-B table every day. He had gotten to know Monoma's class as well as he knew his own, maybe even more. He believed he was in good standing with Monoma. They began talking whenever they ran into each other, even in the halls. And then, the day came.
"A party?" Hatsu asked incredulously.
"Yeah," Monoma confirmed. "We have a party every month at our dorms. I know you're not a part of the class, but everybody wants you to come."
"Including you?" Hatsu found the words spilling out of his mouth.
"I wouldn't mind," Monoma nodded. He didn't need to think about it this time. Hatsu felt his heart flutter...for some reason. He was just excited to have so many new friends; that was why he was so happy.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Hatsu promised. He was a bit too excited. He closed his eyes for a half-second, returning to his composed state. "I'll be there."
And he was. The next week, he found himself outside the 1-B dorm. There wasn't any loud music pumping from inside, no strobe lights shining through the windows. The windows were all covered by curtains. He could hear laughter inside, however. With a deep breath, he knocked. He didn't know what kind of party it would be, so he wore his casual attire: a beige hoodie and black pants.
Pony was the one who opened the door for him. She immediately stepped aside to let him enter. As he stepped over the threshold, the class cheered for his arrival. The ones chilling on the cough stopped their game of Cards Against Humanity. The ones in the kitchen left the brownies on the counter to greet him. A couple of students left a LEGO project as well. A very warm welcome for an outsider, and Monoma was among the ones greeting him.
"Welcome to the party," Kendo smiled. "Right now, we're playing Cards Against Humanity. We can deal you in, but we usually only play one game before switching to something else."
The party was nothing wild. It was mostly the group playing various card games, just enjoying themselves in general. He didn't keep track of how long they partied, but he knew at one point, he was getting giddy from fatigue. While he was usually pretty apathetic, he found nearly everything funny. Soon enough, the girls grew tired of the card games and insisted they play more traditional games like truth or dare, spin the bottle, or seven minutes in heaven. They liked the idea of seven minutes in heaven.
Under normal circumstances, Hatsu would have wholly refused to participate in such an embarrassing activity. His giddiness convinced him it would be fun. And maybe, just maybe, he hoped that things would turn out the way they did. Perhaps he was questioning his sexuality. The class wouldn't judge him for that, surely? He had developed such a great relationship with them all. So, when he and Monoma were pushed into Monoma's room alone, he didn't freak out.
Even though he wasn't frantic, he recognized the awkwardness of the situation. While he was becoming more open to different relationships due to his fatigue, he didn't know if the same was true for Monoma. What if he had played simply to try and get in a room with somebody else specifically? He eyed Monoma warily, trying to read what he was thinking. They both just stared at each other, equally apprehensive.
"What now?" Hatsu asked. "Do we just stand here for seven minutes, or...?" He usually wasn't this straightforward. He wondered if tomorrow when he woke up with a fully rested brain, he would regret even considering this. But right now, Uraraka's teasing sprung up in his head. Hatsu was obsessed with getting to know Monoma. Was that born out of a desire just to be friends, or did he want something more?
"I imagine the others have their ears pressed against the door eagerly," Monoma considered. He was silent for a moment more before continuing slowly. "I mean, it would be quite lame to disappoint."
That was a go-ahead, right? He sure hoped it was, for he had stepped forward and pressed his lips against Monoma's. Huh, when had that happened? He was giddy with excitement, wondering if Monoma would kiss him back. And he did. He closed the small gap that remained between them, and they spent their seven minutes in heaven.
When they emerged into the hallway, it was empty. They both returned downstairs to a silent crowd. Half of them were trying to contain a smile, while the other half were giggling. They had definitely listened in. They looked at the two expectantly, but all Hatsu said was, "What's next?"
The next morning, Hatsu had a hard time rolling out of bed. It wasn't until Iida knocked on his door furiously that he finally got up. "You will be late for class," Iida warned. "I don't know why you were out so late last night, but you broke curfew. I will not allow you to be late for class after such a disgraceful act!"
Where he had been last night...his heart fluttered at the thought of making out with Monoma. He had enjoyed it. He had enjoyed making out with Monoma. Did Monoma feel the same? Did he have feelings for Hatsu, or was he playing the game? Hatsu absentmindedly trudged past Iida while he thought, not replying at all as he made his way downstairs to the kitchen. Should he just bring it up and ask, or would that be awkward? Maybe he should wait until they were alone.
He spent the day in complete bliss, gaining several stinging remarks from Aizawa about his lack of focus. Lunch rolled around, and rather than follow his classmates into the cafeteria, he stood outside the doors, waiting for class 1-B. Sure enough, they showed up, all in one big group. They greeted Hatsu as they walked past, but Hatsu was only looking for one person: Monoma. He was confused when the entire class entered, but he wasn't with them.
He waited a bit longer, in case Monoma had just needed to use the restroom, but he never showed up. Hatsu knew they weren't supposed to leave the cafeteria hallway during lunch, but he needed to speak to him. He tentatively wandered the school, being careful not to run into any teachers. Luckily, it seemed not many were out and about.
He didn't find Monoma. Instead, he found Kendo, who seemed to be on her way to the cafeteria as well. He hadn't even noticed she was missing from the class as well. "Hey, Kendo!" Hatsu called. "Have you seen Monoma?"
"Hatsu, perfect timing," Kendo beamed at him. "Monoma is just around the corner; you should talk to him."
She gave him two thumbs up with her big smile and walked backward toward the cafeteria. That was odd. Hatsu rounded the corner to see that Monoma was indeed there, sitting on a windowsill. Alone. "Hey," Hatsu greeted him, making him flinch. He turned toward the newcomer and blushed.
"Oh...this is awkward..." Monoma mumbled. Hatsu froze. Awkward? Was Monoma embarrassed? Maybe he had just been playing the game, and there was no feeling on his end.
"I can leave if you want," Hatsu offered. "I don't have to sit with the class anymore, either. We can just go back to...not knowing each other."
Monoma seemed to tense up. "If that's what you want," he said, sounding dejected. Wait, dejected?
"Uh...I mean, if it's what you want," Hatsu said, emphasizing the "you." Monoma was silent, so Hatsu hopped up on the windowsill beside him. "Did it...mean anything to you?"
More silence as Monoma gathered himself. It made sense; they had only known each other for half a month. Maybe Hatsu was trying to move too fast. "I don't know, maybe?" Monoma said. "It wasn't unpleasant, but I've never kissed a guy before. I don't know if this weird feeling is just confusion or..."
Even though he didn't finish the sentence, Hatsu knew what he meant. It was the same way he felt last night as he had kissed him. Was it just the rush of doing something he's never done before? No...it was more than that. It was different from the first time he had ridden a roller coaster or the first time he had been rewarded for his quirk. It wasn't the same exhilaration.
"Well, it meant something to me," Hatsu revealed. It wasn't just a confession to Monoma; it was a confession to himself. "If you need more time to decide if it was something for you, that's fine. Just don't feel embarrassed about it if it is because it is for me too."
Monoma fell silent once again. He nodded slowly, glancing over at Hatsu. "Yeah, I think I need time. But either way, I definitely don't want you to leave."
Hatsu smiled triumphantly. "Good, because I don't want to leave."
