Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event to ward off evil spirits with bean-throwing held between winter and spring.
The beans are thrown while saying "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi!", and are believed to drive out the bad and bring in the good.
It's also said that eating the same number of beans as the current year will help you have a healthy and happy year.
At Shibamata Teishakuten's Setsubun, red and blue demons parade along the approach to the shrine, and a "Setsubun Monogatari" is performed on the stage in the precincts of the shrine.
