Darren Dreamer is, as his family name suggests, a dreamer.

Once trapped in a boring 9 to 5, Darren took all his courage in his hands after the death of his late wife, Darleen, and quit to pursue his real ion: painting.

His life has not been easy, but recently he's come into a good sum of money and he has an idea on how to invest them.

The thought of tying himself to a stable job again is sort of scary, he still re how he felt when he worked in business, but eventually Dirk convinces him to give it a try

After some extensive (and expensive) paperwork that drains whatever was left of his and his late wife's savings, Darren's hard work pays off when he opens his art school.

His main job is, of course, that of a teacher, and most of his income comes from private lectures, but he likes to hold free lessons once a week for those less fortunate than him.

While Darren is busy with his new job, Dirk is busy with school and with his love life.

He started dating his girlfriend, Lilith Pleasant, when they were both just 14 and, though they've had their ups and downs, they've stayed together through thick and thin and Dirk wants to marry her once he will have a good enough job to them both.

He will never it this to his father, but he doesn't want his future wife and children to struggle like he had to since Darren quit his job.

He meets his father's new flame, Brandi, and her sons during Christmas.

Dirk already knows one of her sons from school, Dustin (he is also dating his girlfriend's twin sister, Angela), and he doesn't really hang out with him, but he likes the little ones.

The ed family is extremely noisy, but it makes Darren feel alive again and he really cares for them all, so Dirk knows that they will eventually become one big family.

This doesn't mean that they don't have father-son time, though! Watching a movie every Saturday is a tradition of the Dreamer household.

The marriage between Brandi and Darren happens earlier than Dirk imagined, and that is all because of Gabriel.

The news that he is going to have an actual blood brother is a major surprise for Dirk, but he can't help falling in love with the little one when he comes, with his bright blue eyes and black hair.

Brandi and his father get married quickly after the birth because of Darren's sense of honor, and the Brokes move into the Dreamer household just in time for Dirk to leave for college.

Dirk is ionate about computers and enrolls in computer science at Britechester, because his grades are unfortunately not high enough for Foxbury's distinguished degree. Still, he vows to do his best. For the entirety of his first year Dirk does his homework diligently, has good marks and attends all his lectures.

Lilith comes to visit him every weekend without fail, and she is an always welcome distraction.

But life in college is not as Dirk thought it would be, and he misses home. So, at the end of his first year, he takes a hard decision and drops out.

It's not what he expected, nor what his family wanted, but Dirk thinks he made the right choice: he wants to work, and he wants to make something of himself. He can make it.
