Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile...

I am about to start a new series of blogs with the theme of my LEAST favorite recolors for each fighter currently playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Around the time of this game's release, I made a blog series on my favorite recolors.

You may be thinking: "Mack, why would you want to make a blog explaining things that are your least favorites? Don't you want to keep a positive attitude??"

Yes, I do think that it's best for me to keep a good-natured vibe on the Internet, but here's a little something to keep in mind: these articles are not to be taken at face value. Besides, a little bit of criticism isn't terrible, and people seem to be drawn to that kind of excitement from what I observed...🤔

So yes, I will commence with a series of five blogs that explains my least favorite colors for every single fighter playable in Ultimate at this point. Again, this is mostly just for satire. Some of my picks aren't necessarily "bad" skins, just underwhelming. It's completely fine to disagree with me.

This is inspired from a video made by Odyssey Central on YouTube. Like him, some of my reasons may not be super detailed for every fighter.

With that said, here we go! First up is the Original 12 from Smash 64.

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Mario: blue costume

This baby blue and pink outfit debuted in Smash 4, replacing the Jumpman blue in the first three games. It is derived from artwork for Mario Bros. on the Famicom.

While I enjoy this combination of colors, I honestly prefer the deeper blue alt from before. I was tempted to pick the Waluigi alt, as I don't think it makes sense for both Mario and Luigi to have it, but Mario did cosplay as Waluigi in a couple of fan-favorite games...

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Donkey Kong: golden fur

Frankly, I believe that DK has some pretty solid fur colors in the Super Smash Bros. series. Many contain good references, and they're nice and vibrant.

If I had to pick one as my least favorite...it would be this one. I think that this is taken from a recolor in Mario Golf or possibly a reference to the Banana Juice from DKC Returns/Tropical Freeze. Nothing's wrong with golden fur, but I find it slightly underwhelming.

Link: Fierce Deity skin

Hmmmm....how can I put this delicately? I think that Link's colors in Smash Ultimate are the weakest he's had in the Smash series. They aren't horrible, mind you, but there's a lack of color variety. The references are fairly good, though.

Fierce Deity Link is one of the cooler depictions of this hero, but in this game, he doesn't look as good as usual. The tunic in particular is this odd greenish hue, and he doesn't have as much details in the face paint.

I can already anticipate the salt coming from Link fans... :persevere:

Samus: black-and-yellow armor

Like Donkey Kong, Samus Aran is a fighter that generally impresses me with her colors in Smash. Nearly all are based on suits she wears through her home series or resemble similar-looking characters.

This black-and-yellow armor is a new skin in SSBU, replacing the Dark Samus color from 4. From what I recall, this is based around certain characters spotted in the Metroid Prime series... I'm not much of a Metroid enthusiast.

Objectively, there's nothing bad about this color, but...I kinda liked her Dark Samus outfit, even if the real McCoy is her own newcomer in Ultimate.

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Yoshi: Crafted World skin

I believe that I said this before, but Yoshi is essentially the King of Colors in Super Smash Bros.. Each one of his skins calls back to a Yoshi species.

My least favorite color, though, is Crafted World Yoshi. I get the hunch that many players dislike this skin because it's just another green Yoshi. Now, I won't get all ionate and completely diss this outfit; it does act as a cute tease to Yoshi's then-unrealeased game.

However, I will say that it was a missed opportunity to not have this outfit with its own set of recolors, similar to Little Mac from Smash 4. I think that Yoshi could have gotten away with 16 skins.

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Kirby: green skin

Given his simple design, Kirby looks good in most any combination of colors.

Green is a color scheme commonly seen for the puffball. In regards to the Kirby series, this was first seen in...I want to say Nightmare in Dream Land. He would then pop up in Amazing Mirror, Return to Dream Land, and other games as a Kirby color.

The only problem I have is that his shoes are orange. Though green and orange is a good mix of colors, why not give him dark green shoes like in newer games? Not a deal breaker, but a bit odd.

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Fox: white-and-green jumpsuit

This skin was first seen in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It had a more solid white color and deeper green. I believe that it is original to Smash.

I have nothing against Smash original palettes, but where I scratch my head is why the shading was modified after Brawl to be more gray and chartreuse. It's not to the point where it's unplayable, but I feel that it looked perfect in Brawl.

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Pikachu: Selene cap

It's nice to see that Pikachu gained some new alts with the female variation. Selene is a cute character introduced in Gen 7 of Pokémon.

To be honest, the only real reason I put this as the "worst" Pikachu skin is because the other female outfit is much more pronounced in her design. I've seen the other Cosplay Pikachus, so maybe one of those would have worked better.

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Luigi: yellow costume

This is one of Luigi's new skins introduced in Smash 4. The origins are a bit muddled; Aaronitmar claims it's based on Luigi's look in the Atari XE version of Mario Bros.; others claim it's a Smash original. Personally, I see it as an inverse of a color from Mario Golf.

While the color looks decent in-game, this render looks rather washed-out.

My Least Favorite Colors for Fighters in Ultimate (part 1: N64 Cast)-Hello, hello, Super Smash Bros. fans! It's been awhile..

Ness: Fuel outfit

Ness honestly has yet to disappoint me in his recolors. In fact, most fighters have never truly angered me with even my least favorite skins.

Here, Ness dons the same colors as Fuel, an NPC from Mother 3. I think it's peculiar that Ness would borrow an outfit from a character in Lucas' game. Also, the yellow looked better in Brawl.

Captain Falcon: black suit

This color has been seen on the captain ever since the N64 days. Even back then, I found it as a meh skin. It's based on an actor wearing a similar costume for an F-Zero game commercial.

In my completely goofy opinion, I think that Captain Falcon benefits more from bold and bright colors. I understand that he has three blue outfits, but I think that each looks appreciably different.

Jigglypuff: Nurse Joy hat

In her tenure of being a fighter in Smash, Puff has had many different hats. The Nurse Joy one is specifically based on the depiction seen in Gen 6.

As with other skins, this one really isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination; I just prefer other pieces of headwear for my second favorite Pokémon.

And there we go! I will continue making these blogs until I cover everyone up to Min Min. Thanks for reading!

I wish Samus's black alt had red accents instead of yellow. Then it would better reference the Dark Suit from Prime 1 instead of looking like Bat-Samus
