Hey guys! Mako here with a small speculation about- you guessed it- the DLC. Now, you may have seen that in the trailers, the Octarians have different colour palettes- a greenish-blue that looks almost toxic, instead of the red we all know.
Now, there may be a deeper meaning to this. Read more to find out.

As you can guess, the setting of the DLC seems to be somewhere far below Octo Valley- the dark, dim feel and the mysterious kelp in the background of the screen shots point to it. It strongly represents the Deep Sea- or the Midnight Zone.
The Midnight Zone is the pitch black part of the ocean. It is pretty untouched, with only a few known species in it. For instance, the Gulper Eel, Isopods and many more. And what do we see on the subway? The exact same species found in this area. This is certainly not a coincidence.
However, these is something still extremely off about the environment. And it seems to be affecting all sorts of things. Including the Octarians.

From this image, we can see all sorts of trash floating about. Even a Gamecube! In this present day, many pieces of rubbish are out in the ocean, and along with oils and gases released with them, it causes mass pollution. Perhaps this is what has happened in these stages. Maybe the goal is to rid of the products of pollution, such as Octarians. It seems to have effected them too. Let me elaborate.
We can relate green with many things. One of the most popular is a virus. Bacteria and Radiation are pictured as green and harsh colours. What's on the Octarians? Those colours. If humans are wiped out, who will power stations? Who will control radiation/cell phone towers? Nobody! Due to this, it is likely radiation will spread fast. This can effect oceans.
Hence the cause of inklings utterly melting when in with it, and how the Octarians changed from red to green.

Wow that was a very nice speculation I have never thought about that until now and I find it really cool
I've seen some videos talking about this and apparently the English splatoon Twitter posted things that said the new octolings are called "sanitized octolings" no idea if it's true bcuz I haven't checked but eh

See this? Pixel affects when they spawn in. This is telling me imo that these octarians are holograms and/or robots. It’s extremely interesting but I guess we’ll just have to wait till 4-31-18 when the dlc releases ^\_(‘-‘)_/^
