Hello everyone! This is my entry for Maysilee roleplayer changed my mind and even inspired me to do this challenge for Maysilee.

I chose mostly pop music made by women to represent Maysilee. Despite her attitude, or maybe because of it, she is one of the most popular youths in District 12, and she knows it. Pop music resonates with a lot of people because it touches on universal themes like love and anxiety in a manner that’s easy to listen to, so it felt like her.

I found it significant to include music from women because that’s an important part of Maysilee’s identity. She is tough, but also feminine — she doesn’t need to be a tomboy or reject femininity to assert her strength, and she doesn’t need to be a sexualized femme fatale to be a woman who gets things done.

“Renegade” by Cimorelli

“Renegade” is about rejecting the influence of music industry executives and other oppressive forces. It reminds me of Maysilee because of how she responds to criticism. Even when others say nasty things about her, she takes them in stride. She asserts her sense of self wherever she goes, whether by taking a literal beating or just by wearing jewelry.

“My Heart Is the Worst Kind of Weapon” by Fall Out Boy

This song represents Maysilee’s reputation as a mean girl. The line “we are the salt and you are the wound” is a specific jab at Maysilee’s intention to hurt others, especially with her words. Yes, a lot of what she says is out of kindness, like when she points out how people could dress better, but she decides to be as harsh as she is so she is taken seriously. She also doesn’t care what others say about her, so she probably wouldn’t take her own words to heart if faced with them.

“Glitter in the Air” by P!nk

I chose this song to represent the quieter side of Maysilee. Although she is a loudmouth, I’m certain that there are some feelings she kept inside, like rage and even insecurity. “Glitter in the Air” is about loneliness and yearning for the past. As a tribute reaped for the Games, I’m sure Maysilee wanted to stay home and spend time with her family, but it took being separated from them for her to really appreciate them.

“Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + The Machine

To be honest, I stole this song from a different Maysilee playlist, but I do think it fits her. I like to think that it represents her death — she knew when she was reaped that she was likely to die, but she refused to lie down and give up. When she finally ed, she had done her best, and there was nothing left to say. She could leave her worst days behind her and run towards peace knowing that she did everything in her power to stay alive and help her allies.

“My Funeral Song” by Rose Betts

As the title suggests, I added this song to the playlist as the picture of Maysilee’s death and funeral. It is a soft, slow ballad that symbolizes the peaceful end of Maysilee’s life. It also goes over her relationship with Haymitch. The chorus describes the singer’s relationship with a past partner and states that, if they hadn’t known each other when they were young and immature, they may have gotten married rather than ending their relationship on a sour note. Haymitch and Maysilee disliked each other for a long time, but they were very close by the end of her life, and their relationship may have stayed strong had they both survived. I also like to think of it as Haymitch fighting off his depression and working up the strength to mourn Maysilee rather than giving in to the pain and hiding away. She would have told him to toughen up.
