-The Phantom Nona Chapter-

Jake's Cake

~Two Weeks Later~

It was revealed to me that Nona wasn’t possessing my phone from within. It turns out that she’s an actual free-roaming spirit, just cruising through the world at will. You have to had figured that out already, right? I mean, how else would she have made my phone levitate in mid-air? (For the sake of continuity, refrain from answering this question.)

She’s a free-roaming phantom that can interact with any object in the world. Nevertheless, that’s all the more reason why I’d point the finger at her. (Yes, it actually was 11:09 when this started.)

Phantom Nona really loves cake - she practically worships it! One time, when I was walking past the cake shop in Sisuta town, I looked at the shelf of cake. I take my eyes off of it for one second, and when I look back - bam! The shelf had been cleaned of any cake. And then I get a text from Nona saying: “Yum!”

I know what you’re thinking. “Jake! Slow the chuck down, and explain just what the hell is going on!” And then I’d tell you, “I’m getting to that. Shut up.” But we’re here now, so own it. I’ll make this nice and brief. I made a cake for the anniversary of the Cooking Club, but when I leave the cake at school in a room for a moment, somebody gone and took it.

You can assume the perpetrator had already eaten the cake by then, but I was still going to figure out who took it and serve them a slice of justice (pun intended). In order to do that, I needed to be like Detective Conan and investigate (reference intended). The first thing I did was look at the floor with the thought that whoever was in here would’ve left footprints.

I could barely see the footprint groves on the carpet floor. When I followed them, they led straight to Mei who had just happened to be standing right next to the table. I asked her why she was standing there. She looked left and right to make sure no one else was nearby, then whispered, “Because you told me to look after the cake.” It had suddenly come to my mind that I made the biggest mistake I could ever make. I had left Mei and food in the same room, and expected her not to eat it.

“Did you steal my cake Mei?”

“Yes.” Mei said faintly.

“Wow. I can’t believe you actually straight-up itted that. Then where is it?”

“I don’t know. Somebody stole it from me.”

“You can’t even guard food you actually intend to eat. I thought you were better than that.”

She gave me the sad eyes. But I didn’t have time to soak it in (because I’m not a sucker for traps, any kind of them). I asked her where she left the cake and that’s what pointed me to the Occult Club room. The first suspect that came to mind was Oka Ruto, so I questioned her. I had asked her where she was around the time my cake was stolen.

“I-I was chatting with my friends in the lunchroom.” Oka stuttered.

Now I don’t know what came to her first: her autism, or the idea to lie about not having autism.

Too soon...?

“Now I want to ask you something-” Oka said before I cut her off.

But I know this for sure, my Detective Conan senses were tingling. It was either that, or my nose. But I had caught a scent that smelled sweet. It had the scent of strawberries and fudge at the same time. I knew very damn well what that scent was - it was my friggin cake. The cake that I had baked at home with all the love and care a mother would give to her child.

I whooshed out of the room to see a girl with black hair walking down the hallway with meh cake! I wanted to handle this situation calmly because a.) I don’t know her side of the story, and b.) for all I know, she could be dangerous.

I approached her from behind and said, “excuse me”. She looked over her shoulder and turned around to look at me. She was very pretty. Later on in the day, I asked Mei if she knew her, she a drawing of her. Her name was Takeo Yamada.

Let’s get back to the story. What I found was really strange is she gasped as soon as she saw me. I decided to brush it off to avoid any tension in the matter. I said I made the cake she’s holding and asked her where she found it.

“Oh t-this, I found it in the Occult Club room. I didn’t see anyone there, so I was looking around for whoever it belonged to. You can have it back now.” She said, then handed me the cake. I was glad to get my cake back, otherwise I’d probably owe the Cooking Club for a long time for losing their anniversary cake.

“Thanks a lot. Y’know, I’m actually glad you took the cake. If you didn’t, that cake would’ve been digesting in Mei’s stomach right about now. So thanks a lot for saving the day.” I responded.

“Wha-?! Oh, it was nothing. Really.”

“That nothing had gone farther than you’d ever believe. I really appreciate it.”

“Y-you’re welcome.”

As I was about to leave with my cake in hand and my smile through the roof - Takeo spoke up.

“Hey Jake? Can I ask you something?” Takeo asked.

Phantom Nona had disagreed with me staying any longer. She thought Takeo had caught onto Phantom Nona. But I’m not that mean.

“Uhh... Sure.” I replied.

You can already guess what’s about to happen. It’s a typical romance confession.

“I’ve actually known you for a long time, I’ve seen the way you act. You’re funny, smart, and friendly. You’ve also worked wonders I’ve never seen before. First of all, I’ve never heard Mei say a single word to anyone in this whole school - but she talks to YOU. Nonetheless, I love you, Jake Hunter. And I just can’t stand not knowing any longer, do you feel the same way?”

Two thoughts went through my head after she said that. I first thought was, “Wow. This girl is a total stalker.” And the second one was, “Mei is probably gonna have to transfer schools again when she hears someone knows that she talks.”

I had finally answered her. But my answer was probably an even bigger mistake than leaving my cake with Mei. I’m pretty sure you’ll find out why.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t say I do.” I answer.

Takeo looks up. She looks like she’s about to cry.

“What?! W-why?”

“Well... I don’t even know who you are. I’ve never even seen you attend this school.”

Takeo slowly tilted her head down until I couldn’t see her face. She was repeating her words to herself.

“You never noticed me... You never noticed me... You never noticed me...”

Well, that certainly did it. I made a pretty-looking 16-year-old girl go insane. My bad. I knew it was time to book it, so I left her to her thoughts. Now, I really hope I never see her again. But if you know the story, then you know just how well I screwed myself.
