History
Standard Magic is a form of magic that has been standardised throughout the centuries. It is the most common form of magic to know and learn while in school.
This was first created by people in ancient Greece but it wasn't really popularised until the Roman Empire needed to teach many magical soldiers at once and what is now known as Free Magic could not be taught nearly quick enough to be cost effective. And so the era of magic warfare truly began to which Ki's invention in 1440 eventually countered. The same cannot be said for ESP which is easily repressed by mind altering magic that became more and more easily obtainable when not outlawed which is why ESP only became anything more than a novelty in the 20th century.
Legend
There has been a legend in Europe first documented in the 1500s about a person who mastered magic or the sword or something similar as it varies from telling to telling. In the legend it states that someone of unspecified gender, race, nationality, or religion mastered an ability to the point where many people claimed they were a god on earth and it's said that a god typically said to be Apollo came down to this person and granted them godhood.
Modern Day
Nowadays Standard Magic is typically just another of many subjects you learn in high school. Most people know a spell or two although the people that actively study it or get a job in arcanological research of it will know a lot more on average. The farthest anyone has pushed standard magic was the theoretical papers on triple S class magic written by the late Alice Marigold in 1878 which were later confirmed to be mathematically possible by researchers in a Canadian university.
The Marigold Family
(Move to its own page?)
The legend of (insert good name here) generated many attempts to master different abilities throughout the centuries from swords to magic to music. There have been plentiful written s of people striving for mastery solely to do this. One however is more will known and documented than any other: The mystery of the Marigold family.
The Marigold family is a rich English family who were well known for their research in magic. Most of the family were arcanologists although the two most notable are Marie and Alice Marigold. Marie Marigold was a well educated women who studied magic in her free time and in 1856 she published a paper on how one could theoretically sur A ranked magic on their own. However it was published under her husband's name due to the times. The mystery however begins with her daughter.
Born on April 14th 1853 Alice Marigold was the last child of the Marigold family before their mansion burned down and everyone disappeared under circumstances yet unknown. She lived only to age 27 before going missing however even in her short life she contributed greatly to the field of arcanology.
This includes continuing her mother's work, demonstrating S ranked magic to her fellow scientists who after extensive testing confirmed her claim that the strange forms of spells everyone knew were in fact of their own classification the so called Special Rank or "S" for short. She quickly became a big name even at the young age of 22. Over the next five years she'd publish new paper after paper on the effects of all S rank versions of all the spells currently known to man and then she made some of her own standard magic spells only possible at a minimum of S rank just because she could. However her greatest known achievement was when she theorised double S and triple S magic to be possible which caused a large debate... To which she responds with a document describing in detail how it can be done.
The rest is only known from the information gotten from eye witness claims and what little could be recovered from the mansion after it burned down. Alice bought a massive amount of ichor valued at the time for around 2 million dollars when inflated to today's money. It is said that every drop was used in a large experiment talked about in the notes that didn't catch fire. The experiment was to create a 50 metre wide arcane circle and use it along with approximately an imperial ton of ichor all to preform a creation elemental spell she called "Rainbow Class: Divine Retribution" a spell that scientists later note sur SSS tier- what we call EX tier. It is theorised by some that like the Legend her mother strived to reach she was noticed by the gods and was taken up to the Heavens. Although the common opinion is that she accidentally killed herself using the spell since every attempt to replicate it since has resulted in the to be injured or killed much like Alice's other "Rainbow Class" spells.
