Hello everyone, here we are again with another #takeover!

Jo here, journalist curator, with my post for the theme of real life heroes. We've had superheroes last week, it's now time to show that we have heroes on earth too!

The role of disaster management is to help a place that has difficulty humanwise, with the economy, or the environment after a disaster of all kind occured. They are the one that try and repair the impacts. When does it become a disaster? When something has a hazard capacity on vulnerable people.

There is different types of disasters. There are natural disasters, which are either Geophysical, hydrological, climatological, meteorological or biological. There is also man-made disasters which can be environmental, due to pollution, or accidents. The last type of disasters is complex emergencies, such as food insecurities, armed conflict or epidemic.

No matter what type of disaster it is, the disaster management is here to help!

Here are the fields in which you can work in disaster management

- Disaster prevention : engaging activities to prevent or avoid impacts due to disasters

- Disaster preparedness : measures taken to prepare and reduce impacts.

- Disaster response/relief: immediate and short term needs

- Disaster recovery: rebuilding, healthcare, etc.

Different organizations that are part of disaster management

- The United Nations (the blue helmets are installed worldwide to help)

- Health care in danger project

- The international federation of red cross and red crescent societies

- The international committee of the red cross

- International non-governmental agencies

- National organizations

If you would want to be in the disaster management field and help others, there is actual programs to work in that!

Emergency and disaster management programs exist in plenty of institutions, I'm sure you could find one in your country! There are degrees in emergency management, but also master degrees if you wanna push it deeper.

Once you have a degree, you'll be able to work for one of the big organizations that help in case of disasters.

1556 : Shaanxi earthquake

This big earthquake cause about 830,000 deaths in total. It was estimated to have an average of 41,500 deaths per second! This was horrible and tragic. It lasted about 20 seconds and was an earthquake of magnitude 8.

1945 : Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear detonation

Both of those detonation lasted for about a minute. One minute of destruction for each detonations, there was about 100,000 deaths. It is not as bad then other earthquakes, but it is still awfully bad. We also have to consider that this disasters also destroyed everything, including vegetation.

Chinese famine, 4 years worth of deaths.

Over those four years, the famine killed about 30 million of people. That is one of the worst disasters ever, not as quick, but just as bad. About 14 people per minute were dying. 14 people per minute....times 4 year. That is really bad.

Obviously, there are way more disasters that occured! I just chose those 3 to show different type of disasters and what they caused.
