Wrath of Phantom Nona

[Friday, October 12th, 2018 - 4:35 PM]

So I was driving through town on a Saturday afternoon with a cake inside the box I kept in the enger seat (except that the chances of that cake still being in the box by now are three thousand, seven hundred twenty to one because Nona probably ate it), listening to some tunes through my phone which I had plugged into my car, when I see Oka Ruto walking on the sidewalk.

Being the good samaritan I was I pulled over and asked Oka if she wanted a ride to wherever she was heading. She accepted my offer with a smile (that she tried hiding behind her hand but was too blatantly obvious to not realize) and I drove her towards her destination. But while we were in a car she did not bring up the most pleasant conversation.

“Do you like her?” Oka said very softly.

“What did you say?” I asked as I turned down the music volume.

“This “Phantom Nona” seems to have grown attached to you. Of course her being an entity is a problem in itself. I want to know if you have any feelings for her.”

I chose to be reserved with her. Also considering that Nona can hear every word we’re saying.

“Listen. I like Nona. Okay? But I don’t love her in the sense of the word. But I do care about her.”

“What would you do if you woke up the next day, and Nona had disappeared? Would you feel alone, empty, melancholic?”

“Woah. That’s very heavy-”

“Answer the question, Jake.”

“To sum it up: yes. I would feel a little lonely without her.”

“I see.”

I mean, it is true that I’d miss Nona if she ever did transition into the afterlife she was meant for; but thinking about it would only make me worry. About two minutes after our “small talk”, Oka told me stop stop on the viaduct that runs over a river. What happened next was the turning point of this whole thing.

She told me she was going to walk the rest of the way home which didn’t make sense to me because I could’ve just taken her the whole way home. But after she opened the enger door and was about to step out she said “I’m sorry”.

Before I could react she had swiped my phone off the dashboard and ran towards the side of the viaduct so she could chuck my phone over the edge and into the river. I bolted towards the side to watch my phone fall into the blue abyss. That phone was the only thing keeping Phantom Nona in this world. And now it’s gone.

Phantom Nona was gone.

I turned to face the sole culprit of the crime and angrily stomped towards her.

“Jake. Listen, I-”

She was interrupted by the palm of my hand smacking across her face.

“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?!” I yell at her.

Oka tried retaliating by attempting to smack me across the face but I caught her arm and pushed her towards the guard rail on the side of the viaduct with her head hanging over the river.

“Nona never did anything wrong! All she ever wanted was to embrace the second chance that YOU gave her!” I yelled.

“Nona is a ghost! She was never meant to stay here in this world. And she was dangerous and LITERALLY possessive! Who knows what else she was capable of!” Oka said trying to struggle out of her position.

“She was harmless! An innocent high school girl that could do nothing more than what a phone could do! But of course you had to overlook all of that!”

“She was a danger to herself and everyone around her! She threatens to kill whoever gets close to you! You know what we call those? YANDERES!”

“She was right about you! Nona told me you were a threat the second she saw you and she was right! If only I hadn’t let you gotten ahold of my phone this would’ve never happened!”

“I did her a favor Jake! I sent her back to wherever she came from! You shouldn’t have gotten attached to her knowing that one day she would disappear! You need to forget she ever existed and move on!”

“You betrayed me Oka! I can’t trust you again!”

“Are you really going to kill me Jake?! For a ghost girl that you don’t even love?!”

“I DID LOVE NONA!”

That was the time I finally came to with my feelings for Nona. I wasn’t being honest with myself when I said I didn’t harbor any feelings for her. But now was the time that I decided to be honest with my feelings. Unfortunately, it’s a little too late for that.

I wasn’t going to kill Oka. And I certainly wasn’t going to face the consequences for cold-blooded murder. So I let go of her so she could fall to her knees on the concrete floor and hyperventilate.

“I hope you’re happy! I hope you’re real f**king happy!” I yelled as I got inside my car and drove away. She said she could walk herself the rest of the way home, so I let her.

[Saturday, October 13th, 2018 - 11:23 AM]

It hasn’t been a day yet and it was already starting to feel a little empty in this house (despite my sister still trying to cook something in the kitchen, when will she learn). I’ve only had a Phantom follow me around for about three to four weeks and I already miss that feeling. I thought I should start to let go if I ever wanted to start feeling better.

Then came a knock at my front door. I open the door to see Mei standing there with Oka hiding behind her. I knew what this was about. Mei wanted me to apologize to Oka for slapping her. Fortunately, that’s all she knew. If she had known that I almost killed her she would’ve flipped out.

Thinking back on it I guess almost hanging Oka over a guard rail was a bit much. So I told them that I’d buy all of us some pizza and ice cream (because those really are the two best things to leave the house for). We all got in my car and I put the key into the ignition.

But then I had realized I’d forgotten my wallet back in my room. So I went back inside the house and became completely unaware of the events that happened while I was gone. But Mei and Oka gave me the story.

When I had closed the car door every single car door had locked thus keeping Mei and Oka inside the car. This wasn’t because I had flipped a switch or anything. This was because a special someone had been hiding this whole time waiting to spring the trap.

“You thought you could get rid of me? You thought you could throw me away JUST LIKE THAT?!” Said a voice coming out of the car’s internal speakers.

“Who- What’s happening?!” Mei cried.

“Nona…” Oka said.

“That’s right! It’s your ol’ ‘yandere’ pal, Nona! To be honest, I thought I was going to have to wait a lot longer before I could get my revenge. But looks like things are in my favor today!” Nona said before letting out what Oka called maniacal laughter.

“Please! Please stop Nona!” Mei pleaded.

“Oh! Mei Kotoro! I almost forgot you were here! That’s PERFECT! TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE! When I’m done with you, Jake won’t need a best friend anymore!” Nona said along with some more maniacal laughter.

Yeah, now that I look at what I just typed -- it seems like Oka was spot-on about Nona being dangerous. I mean, look at how I’ve capitalized those words to dramatize the moment. Nona’s clearly gone insane.

This is when I finally came back outside the house to try and open my car door. But of course the door was locked and the keys we’re already in the car.

“Hey guys? Can you open the door please?” I asked.

“Help us! Nona has us trapped in here!” Oka yelled.

“What? What’re you talking about? Don’t you that you threw her into a river?!”

“I’m serious Jake! She’s inside the car or something!”

“What’re you- oh.”

At that point, I realized how this was possible. Nona wasn’t in my phone when Oka threw it into the river. I had my phone plugged into my car via USB. Which means she never left the car this whole time.

“Do something! She’s going to start driving the car somewhere!” Mei yelled.

“Guys. Nona can’t move the car. It’s a stick shift.”

Nona only has the ability to manipulate electronics through re-coding. But since the car gears are not shifted through buttons there’s nothing Nona can do to move the car.

“Aw crap.” Nona said through the car’s internal speakers.

“Oh. Then I guess there’s nothing to worry about- wait. What’s that sound?” Mei says abruptly.

“Oh that? I’m just reversing the air flow and sucking all the air out of the car. You’ll likely suffocate in three minutes.” Nona said.

Sh*t was getting serious at this point. Mei and Oka were both going to die from lack of oxygen if I didn’t get them out of there or let air in.

(A little side note: no car is capable of vacuuming out air from the inside of itself. This is just a fictional story. Chill guys. Don’t be afraid of your cars.)

“GET US OUT OF HERE!” Oka cried.

I looked for the nearest thing I could use to break the window so the girls could climb out. I took one of the fence planks my family uses for the garden and tried swinging it at the window. Unfortunately, I missed the window and ended up hitting the roof of the car instead as well as breaking the plank in the process.

“You didn’t even hit the glass! Dumbass!” Oka yelled.

I decided “screw it” and broke the car window with a single punch. Both Mei and Oka were very impressed by my strength.

“Wow! I did not think that was gonna work!” I said looking very surprised.

Pretty awesome, right? Well I hate to break it to you but that didn’t actually happen. I did punch the window with my bare hand but it didn’t break. But SOMETHING broke. I took my hand away from the window and said one thing:

“F********************K!”

“Oooh. He’s not gonna be able to hold his ice cream cone anymore.” Mei said.

“Jake. Please don’t hurt yourself! They’re not worth it!” Nona said.

Time was running out. They only had about one minute of air left before they would suffocate. So I quickly ran inside the house and brought back the one thing I knew would be powerful enough to break the glass window: a Dualshock 4 controller.

(A Dualshock 4 controller is basically a PlayStation 4 controller.)

“Alright Sony. Don’t fail me now.” I said as I was winding up to pitch the controller at the window.

“Don’t do it Jake! You don’t need them!” Nona yelled.

The controller already left my hand and made its’ course towards the window. The window glass shattered on impact when the controller made with it. And the controller also made it in one piece. If it were an Xbox One controller I had thrown at the window it would’ve snapped in two. I need to thank Sony later for deg durable controllers that can save lives. I bet that’s something you never thought you’d see in a news article.

[Saturday, October 13th, 2018 - 1:04 PM]

Nona put my friend, Mei, and my frenemy, Oka, in danger. She was clearly unstable and I knew I couldn’t keep her around any longer. I had called someone to come tow the car away and compact it in a junkyard. I couldn’t turn the car off so I just left it on when the man came to pick up the car. He put the hook under the car and before he got in his car I gave him a heads up.

“Just in case, if you hear a voice coming from inside the car… drive faster.” I said.

And I didn’t see Nona again after that.

“This may sound a little crazy but I think I might miss her.” Mei said.

“You’re right. It does sound crazy.” Oka said.

“Oh you’re one to talk Ms. Occult Club President.” I retorted.

It didn’t seem like Mei and Oka were in shock too much. In fact, I think we can finally move past of the events that have happened these past few weeks. When all is said and good, I don’t think my story is over yet. In fact, I bet there’s still more adventure left to be had.

“But first… let’s go take me and my broken ass hand to a hospital.” I grunted.
