Hiya papaya, it’s your friendly neighborhood journalist curator Lotte, here with my part for this weeks #takeover. Today I’ll be talking about the Black Futsu pumpkin in this week’s pumpkin takeover, so let’s get going.

The Futsu Black pumpkin is a heirloom Japanese pumpkin, which has a deeply ribbed and bumpy skin that varies from a deep black-green to a warm-buff orange colour. The skin of this pumpkin is edible and the flesh has a fine, nutty flavour.

Each pumpkin is around the 3-5 lbs and each plant can get between the 3 and 5 pumpkins each. The size varies from the size of a grapefruit or about three times that size. The smallest size is already enough for a good full lunch for one person and the bigger sizes can easily be a meal for up to 4 people.

If you plan on growing them yourselves, it’s best to seed them when you’re certain the danger of frost has ed and the soil temperature has reached 70 °F. You then need to wait about 105 days until they’re mature enough to be harvested.
