I had no idea a series like this even existed to be completely honest. My friend is always recommending dope anime for me to binge & this one always came up as a favorite for him. I finally decided to put my full attention on this particular series. Just off the pics alone I knew that this anime might be something different. Based in present day Hokkaido (My dream place to visit) we meet the Immortal Saichi Sugimoto, who is a skilled war veteran. From what I saw, Sugimoto tries to pick of the pieces of his life that he longed for. Dealing with PTSD & a sense of emptiness, Sugimoto tries to find his way through a gold treasure hunt. I was thinking to myself “So why is he deemed immortal?” It’s because he always gets out of a life or death situation with HIS LIFE & no one can seem to kill him. Sugimoto is a savage when it comes to the battle field & that’s something we get reminded of throughout the series. Stumbling throughout the woods, Sugimoto meets a young Ainu clan girl named Asirpa.

Asirpa is a little girl who’s very skilled at killing prey & having great knowledge of the wildlife. Sugimoto runs into Asirpa after a bear is in pursuit & they take it down together. Also to add, the cgi in this series is so peak & it’s crazy for it to be so good quality for such an underrated anime. Realizing the infamous gold that he seeked originated within the Ainu clan, Sugimoto agrees to team up with young Asirpa to hunt back what’s rightfully hers. Thus we have Golden Kamuy!

𒅒𝐈 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐖𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐎𝐧𝐞𝐬..𒅒

It seems like Asirpa & Sugimoto weren’t the only ones huntin for gold. Different parts of the government, society including rogue lieutenants are after that gold as well. Making the road to riches even harder for Asirpa & Sugimoto. The gold being a motif throughout the series as you see the characters rip each other a part for it. Nah, literally. A map isn’t said for indicate a route as to where the gold is stored. The maps is in fact fabricated throughout 24 tattooed prisoners of Abishiri prison. How to retrieve a piece of the map you ask? Either kill the prisoner & skin them or capture them. Cruel & twisted is this story’s theme.

This anime is one the most graphic I’ve seen thus far. The characters really skin & gut things like it’s nothing! Everyone has a reason as to why they’re after the gold & against resistance. I love how this series really highlights each of its characters & provides proper backstories for the most important. It helped me to appreciate the story more & understand everyone’s motive & reasons for who they are in the present day. Unfortunately some fell victim to greed, psychosis & lust. Trust gets broken a lot & you really see some many lines of loyalty being crossed. The hunt for the treasure at the cost of morality. Dehumanization.

𒅒𝐏𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐈𝐧 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐞𒅒

Despite the crazy action, guns & bloodshed scenes in this anime, it’s quite hilarious. This is one of the most unhinged anime of all time. It’s so damn wild & funny though. The writers do a great job of teaching us new things & little facts about the Ainu Clan & hunting while still being comedic. I’ve learned so many things about Ainu culture & how to even go about trapping animals from this anime lmao. They are always cracking adult jokes & backing it up with weird scenes as well. It’s safe to say you never know what you’re getting yourself into with a Golden Kamuy episode. From dick jokes, freaky scenes, weird faces, eerie simp characters & drunk conversations, you can never predict how far they’ll take the profanity & weirdness.

No matter how crazy you predict it is…i guarantee you it’s 10 times worse than that. Maybe that’s why this series doesn’t get that much hype because it’s really graphic to the point it can’t even be on most streaming services lol. Definitely not an anime to watch with your parents. Usually I’m against most anime that do too much & get too weird but this one is just too funny to drop. You actually learn about culture & customs and can still have a few laughs every episode. It’s the perfect blend of pushing the limits within reason.

𒅒𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐈𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𒅒

With all of the violence & treasure hunting in this series, you really come to realize that the wholesomeness is the best part. Sugimoto seeks to find purpose in his life again & Aspira tries to find out more about hers as well. The two met by fate & it’s much better when they are just living their lives. It’s tease throughout the series just how important living in the moment truly is with people you care about. ions you once had before are now changing. Most of the characters in this series suffered huge hits due to the war that descended upon them. It really messed up their minds & the way they view the world. Sugimoto being a war veteran himself just wants the best for Asirpa. He was the good in a girl who hadn’t stained her hands with blood like he has.

When all you see & hear is bloodshed, you think that way of living is normal. Golden Kamuy showcases just how people living with those regrets, anxiety & trauma try to live on. Sugimoto may have regrets but saw something in Aspira that gave him the boost he needed. Sugimoto’s true character isn’t fully revealed right away in this series and that doesn’t happen too often in anime nowadays. It felt like they were breaking the mold of Saichi Sugimoto throughout the series and letting us know who he was & how that differs from who he is now. Viewed as the immortal but feeling dead inside. Just to eventually find the light again.

𒅒𝐀𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐩 𝐓𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞𒅒

I don’t know many anime out there like Golden Kamuy. I’ve seen quite a bit of anime within the last few years and this one is incomparable in my eyes. It quite literally is the blueprint to edgy anime with a cultural twist. It’s safe to say I thoroughly have enjoyed it & hopes for some type of reboot of it in the future. I think this series is structured with great entertainment, plot, characters & action scenes. It has something for every fan wanting anime to push past its limits. Unforgettable scenes man I swear. It always kept me tuned in no matter how deep in the anime I got. I’d recommend this to anyone who hasn’t seen it & can take a joke. However, it still conveys very important themes that I can take away from in my own life.

Take away & apply in my own life. I wish it wasn’t as underrated as it is, but I know the anime community couldn’t take it if it was #Dragonball popular. This is one of those hidden gems that should probably stay hidden from certain audiences lol. There isn’t an anime I’ve seen that I haven’t enjoyed at least one thing about & this one has plenty to offer. The Golden Kamuy series truly is an underrated masterpiece of an anime. Great fiction but having amazing war like depictions.
