History and Details

There was a time where the ocean and the land were in perfect harmony. Merpeople would walk amongst humans free and welcomed, and humans would be invited to the underwater kingdom to share the merpeople’s power. This was beneficial for both, as merpeople could buy most of their goods (especially the dry ones) on land, and humans were able to get blessed by the Mer-King, Auran to have powers like the merpeople did.

However, once the land King Vestian ascended to the throne, he felt he needed more power in order to be a good ruler the way that the sea king was. He then asked Auran to give him more magic so they could both be powerful, but Vestain asked for too much— too much power that Auran thought he wouldn’t use wisely— and refused. King Vestian was furious and declared war between the two realms.

The war went on for many years. Sometimes it was violent and bloody, and other times nothing would happen at all. Of course, merpeople and humans didn’t interact with each other anymore unless it was for bloodshed, and the relationship between the two went sour. The Ocean also removed any power that the humans had so that it wouldn’t be used against them, leaving only the humans who fought on the Ocean’s side to keep their powers. Among these humans were the families of the Gordans and the Von Moirés, of which Felix is the last member remaining.

Eventually, the Ocean won the war, even though they were less than half the size of the Land’s Kingdom, and decided they wanted peace amongst the two realms again. However, things didn’t go back to how they were. The Ocean kept their distance, retreating to their deep-water Kingdom where no humans could reach without magic. The humans, too, shunned anyone they thought to be a mermaid or a power-, as they were still loyal to the Ocean.

Pirates, however, seem to be the only ones who ignore the tension between the two realms, traveling in the space between and searching the open seas for untapped power and magical advantages over others. They believe that magical items belonging to merpeople may have washed up on distant shores, and that, by finding them, they can gain more power than humans ever have.

Additionally, because pirates, in a way, belong to the sea, they are granted with the power of curses. This means that they can place a curse on anyone who breaks a pirate’s oath or promise.

Leopold, Fin’s father, had been a gambler. He’d stay late at taverns and other criminal-infested places to wager anything he could offer. He wasn’t bad, too, which meant that he and his wife lived a pretty decent life, considering neither of them even worked. One night, however, he lost a bet to a group of men— crew mates of the Desperado, famous for their cruelty— and ran home. After losing all his money, he’d stupidly bet his life— and his wife’s as well. Leopold didn’t yet know that the men were pirates, and thought that they wouldn’t be able to find him and Marina in the small house they had near the middle of town.

A couple nights later, though, they were woken up in the middle of the night by the pirates who stormed their home. They slashed the throats of the two, wanting their debating paid in full. What the crew mates of the Desperado didn’t expect, though, was for a small child to be left in their hands. Because Leopold had only bet his own and his wife’s life, the pirates couldn’t kill the baby just like that, so they decided to take him and make him a pirate too. The baby Finnegan was able to his name and his parents, but most of the other memories were erased when he swore to the Desperado’s oath at 5 years old.

Life as a crew member wasn’t so bad. In his younger years, he was taken care of by the ship’s doctor, Corovan, and as he got older, he and some of the other crew , namely Jenson and Friere, became close. Still, watching as the Captain of the Desperado and the meaner of the crew raided small towns and royal ships, killing anyone who didn’t comply with their orders, Finnegan longed to be free of them.

At around 16 years old, he’d earned the trust of his crew mates and Captain and he ed them in their pillages. Witnessing first-hand what it was like— killing families, stealing from children and elderly, destroying homes and livelihoods— Fin knew he couldn’t stay. He didn’t know what the price would be for breaking his oath, but he knew that it would be worth his freedom. Leaving some of the people who’d been kind to him and his newfound family on the Desperado overall was difficult, and he took a while to finally commit to his departure, however.

Then, at 20, the Captain tried forcing Fin to kill one of his crew mates, Jenson, whom he was closest with. Jenson had fallen in love with a girl from a city they frequented, and asked the Captain to let him leave the pirate life so they could get married, as he was the only one who could forgive an oath’s hold. Unfortunately, the Captain didn’t believe in love, only loyalty, and told him the only way he could be free of the oath was if he died. He told Fin to kill him in his sleep, sure that Jenson would try escaping anyway, and since he and Fin were close, Jenson wouldn’t expect it. Of course, Finnegan couldn’t do it, and decided he’d help Jenson escape instead. They’d asked Friere to escape with them, but he refused, and so the two decided to leave on their own.

Their plan was going perfectly, and they were almost off the ship when the Captain stopped them, aiming a gun at them. Friere stood behind him, and it was suddenly clear to the two boys that they’d been betrayed. Jenson was shot in the head, and Fin had no choice but to leave him behind to avoid the same fate.

Upon leaving the ship and essentially breaking his oath, he felt a searing pain in his back, but kept going until he was far enough away from the Desperado. He had gained a large scar in the shape of a sun on his back, which he discovered would burn whenever he lied.

Felix is the final surviving member of two of the only power-wielding human families, the Gordans and the Von Moires. This, he has the power to liquify himself and other objects, becoming nearly impossible to beat in combat, as well as being able to use his surroundings to his advantage. He’s able to control the water he creates, but no other bodies or sources of water. Additionally, intense heat or prolonged exposure to heat can cause objects (and even himself in his liquid form) to evaporate. + he can only use this power on objects his size or smaller and not on other living beings (including plants and animals)

His parents had become masters in their powers, his father being able to control all saltwater and his mother being able to liquify objects of any size. Being Captains of The Bloodless, they established themselves as the single most fearsome gang of pirates in the Sea, with a loyal crew and formidable power. Because they were also still friends of the Sea and were such good pirates, they had plenty of magical items that could give small power to of the crew.

However, this also meant that they were the biggest target for other pirates, as having them alive was a big risk to everyone else, but no one ever managed to so much as land a scratch on the Captains or their crew. This was the reason their ship was called the bloodless, because no blood ever landed on their deck that didn’t belong to other pirates, causing some others to believe that they had no blood at all.

Eventually, some 20 of these smaller, less powerful pirates ed up together to try and eliminate them, and together, they managed to kill the Captains and most of their crew and steal all their most precious belongings and magical items (stealing the magical items proved to be quite useless, however, as they were charmed to only work for of The Bloodless).

The crew was left powerless and the 14-year old Felix was left to Captain the ones that remained. Their reputation was tarnished and they were all filled with self-hatred and grief, and Felix struggled a lot holding his crew together. They didn’t want to listen to a kid, they’d say, especially one with hardly any power at all. Felix tried boosting their spirits as hard as he could, but eventually grew tired and cold hearted. He grew his power over the years and used it against his crew, punishing them if they didn’t follow his orders.

Their reputation slowly went back up, but they were still a much easier target than they had been before Felix’s parents were killed, so The Bloodless decided they’d travel to faraway lands in order to find the most powerful items. It also became known amongst other pirates that of The Bloodless hated their Captain for his cruelty, and began to fear him the most, nicknaming him “Captain Coldheart.”

After 10 years of his parent’s death, Felix and his crew arrived at a hidden island where an almost infinite source of treasure and power awaited them. In order to enter, a magic had to be accompanied by a non-magic , so Felix went in with his right hand, Gertras. They only had about an hour to gather all they could, amd Felix was drawn to a shell he found in a cave. It glowed brightly the closer Felix came to it, but when he touched it, his body began to freeze. He yelled for Gertras to help him— to take the shell or to find some other magical item to help melt the ice away, but Gertras only stood and watched. When Felix was completely frozen, Gertras smiled, telling Felix that he’d had it coming for him after how cruel he’d been to his crew, finally becoming the “Captain Coldheart” he was meant to be.

Felix was a block of ice left alone in the cave. Gertras left and became Captain of The Bloodless, bringing back magic and riches for the crew. They became feared once again, but they were reckless, and holding onto their power proved difficult.

Eventually, the ice around Felix began to melt, but the cold never went away. He felt it all over his body, from his bones all the way to his hands. His eyes had become an icy blue as well, and he had streaks of white going through his silky black hair. Additionally, instead of transforming objects into water, he could only spread a thin frost over them.

He found a small boat and brought only his shell with him, deciding that it was too risky to take anything else. He rowed away from the island, unsure of what he hoped to find. He thought he’d be lucky to find another island and die peacefully, but didn’t mind being captured by other pirates because at least they wouldn’t hesitate to kill him. Instead, though, he was found by Fin and Jackie, and ed them on their ship until they found land and he could live a new solitary life away from piracy.
