Not Just Another Love Story

Hey fairies! It’s Lucy here back with a new blog and today’s was commissioned by Monarch! They asked for a blog that discussed both a ship and magic, one ship came to mind and seems we both had the same idea. Thanks so much for the request Monach and for your incredible patience. Now, onto the blog!

The Ship

The ship chosen was Zevis. For anyone who’s confused, this is the ship of the black mage Zeref Dragneel and the fairy tactician Mavis Vermillion. These two were shipped pretty much from the get go and it’s not hard to see why. They’re absolutely adorable together. In the past I’ve referred to them as Yin and Yang because, if you think about it, they are the embodiment of what Yin and Yang stand for. Mavis is the representation of light, purity, good, innocence etc. she is a fairy filled with love and joy. Zeref is the representation of darkness, corruption, evil, sin etc. he is a demon full of hatred and anger. Despite being exact opposites, they’ve stroked the perfect balance. Mavis has hatred and corruption in her and Zeref has love and innocence in him, together they balance one another out and can exist in harmony. Since they’re opposites, naturally they’re drawn to each other. She is the light in his life and he is the darkness in her life, they accept each other for who they are. They’re flaws, quirks, everything that makes them, them. Opposites always attract dear fairies.

Their Magic

Both Mavis and Zeref use very interesting forms of magic but for this I’m going to focus on their main magic type, starting with Mavis. As we all know Mavis primarily uses illusion magic, this is a type of magic that she unknowingly taught herself during her time on Tenjrou Island. This type of magic allows her to created detailed illusions that can fool not just her enemies but even herself. We know her magic can fool Mavis herself because she believed her best friend Zera had survived when their guild was attacked but learns years later that she was merely an illusion created by Mavis’ mind. That’s a pretty powerful magic type of can ever fool the . Mavis developed this type of magic at a young age in order to protect her mind from the reality of what had happened to everyone on her island. It’s like the ultimate copping mechanism. Now for Zeref. For him I’ll be focusing on his curse of contradiction because I honestly find it the most fascinating. This type of magic, as the name says, is a curse that results in death the more the person cursed cares about life. Zeref tried to defy nature itself to bring his little brother back to life and as a result was cursed. Kind of a harsh judgement for wanting a loved one back. The more Zeref valued life, the more death his magic caused. This lead to Zeref becoming the person we see him as. Hollow, unfeeling, couldn’t value life less if he tried. He did this to stop the curse from claiming anymore lives.

A Fated Meeting

Mavis and Zeref met by chance, or perhaps they were fated to meet one another. Perhaps something a little more, magical or cosmic, drew them both to the lake where they first meet that day. It’s thanks to this chance encounter that Mavis and her friends learn the skills necessary to save the city of Magnolia and realize their dream of creating a magic guild. It’s thanks to this chance meeting that Zeref is reminded that magic can be a beautiful thing that brings joy to others, even someone cursed like him. She knew he was cursed yet was always happy to see him which brought light to his dark life. Together they learned more about themselves, each other and how magic can be both beautiful and dangerous. It’s something that shouldn’t have happened but as Zeref feared, Mavis became a new victim of the curse of contradiction. This resulted in her becoming immortal like Zeref and to cause death the more she valued life because during a war, she, as the tactician, unknowingly decided who lived and who died. He tried to make her feel better, said they’d be together but when he finally got to kiss her, he lost her.

Hate Disguised As Love

Losing his little brother, becoming the first victim of the curse of contradiction, causing death wherever he went and then losing his first, and probably only, love lead to Zeref becoming the man we see his as. Gone is the boy who once had hope of not spending eternity alone and is his place is a cold hearted, emotionless man. Suffering from the curse of contradiction, losing her immortal life, discovering her best friend was nothing more than an illusion, none of this dampened Mavis’ bright smile. Unlike Zeref, she remained the happy, bubbly person she had always been. For years he assumed she was dead, for years she watched over Fairy Tail, neither of them could have predicted that they’d cross paths once more. Upon hearing that Emperor Spriggan of Alvarez was Zeref and that he planned to invade Fiore, Mavis, for the first time, was unable to hide her hatred and disgust toward the man she once loved. Zeref was no longer looking for a way to end his immortality, now he wanted Mavis’ power. Fairy Heart. He allowed his followers to torture her, grinning as he watched and she felt her hatred for him grow. She wanted their pointless war to end, she wanted him to die, but her heart was full of contradictions. She wanted him to die but she also wanted him to live so they could be together. Despite telling himself for years that he was content being alone, as soon as he heard Mavis still cared for him, Zeref was no longer able to lie to himself. He wanted to be with her, he wanted a new life with her. Their cursed contradicted each other and reset their story.

A Second Chance At Life

The curse of contradiction reset their story, or rather began a new chapter that would lead to a happier ending for the two of them. After the war, when Mavis and Zeref meet once again, it’s for the first time. They have no memory of the people they were before and so their lives began again. They’re living normal lives without fear of war, death or curses and they found each other again. Their meeting was fated again but this time the road will hopefully lead them to the happy ending they originally had hoped for. Their story is told as though they are connected by the red string of faith. Two soul mates who are destined to meet in every life they live, fall in love again with each meeting and experience new journeys together. An ordinary boy and an ordinary girl who have lived extraordinary lives that they no longer but those who know them will never forget. To see the two finally able to be together is a heartwarming sight for the of Fairy Tail and it gives the hope for the future. Life doesn’t always play out the way we hope but sometimes we get a second chance to give it another go. This is the case for Mavis and Zeref and it brings their story of the cursed boy and the cursed girl to a close and a new story begins.
