Who is Lucy Heartfilia?
Lets start with the basics, who is Lucy and what do we know about her? Lucy is the daughter and only child of business tyrant Jude Heartfilia and his late wife Layla. As a young child her home was full of laughter, joy and happiness until the untimely ing of her mother when their house became silent and cold. Although Jude loved his daughter dearly, he allowed his grief over losing his wife to consume him mind, heart and soul. The fear of losing his daughter just as he lost his wife was too much for him and he left Lucy alone. Perhaps it was the fact that Lucy resembled his beloved Layla so much, her long golden hair and large doe brown eyes could have made them twins, and had the same magic power that caused him to become distant from her. With only the servants of the house and her celestial spirits for company, Lucy endured the loneliness for as long as she could, playing the perfect daughter until it became too much. At the young age of 17, she left the cage of loneliness and searched for a life of adventure and that’s exactly what she found in Hargeon when she met a certain pink haired boy. Natsu. A chance meeting changed both of their lives. That fated encounter lead to Lucy finally finding a place she felt at home surrounded by people who cared for her. Fairy Tail welcomed her with open arms and she finally had the life she had been dreaming of for so long. Gone was the lonely child who only had her spirits and servants for company and in her place is a confident mage surrounded by people who love her and a reckless dragon who promises to stay by her side.
Her Magic

Lucy, in my opinion, has the most interesting type of magic. Celestial magic allows the caster to open a gate to the celestial world, or land of the stars of you will. What’s interesting about this type of magic is it’s potential to be more than mere gates opening between worlds. As we seen with Lucy, celestial mages have the potential to gain the power of Star Dresses which allow the caster to use magic similar to whichever celestial spirit they chose but there’s a catch. As for as we know Star Dresses can only be used if one holds a golden Zodiac key and this puts Lucy at huge advantage over other mages like her. As the holder of 10 of the 12 Zodiacs she sheer amount of power she holds in her hands is immeasurable since she holds the strongest of all the Zodiacs, Leo. Her relationship with her spirits also aids her strength as they won’t hesitate to use their own power to open their gates to help their friend. Lucy’s skill with Star Dresses and her own strength has allowed her to achieve something no one thought possible, Star Dress fusion. She has the ability to combine two of her Star Dresses and drastically increase her strength while keeping her spirits gates open. Celestial spirits are also able to open their own gates without using their mages magic power although it does take a lot out of them. Loke is the best example to use of a spirit who kept their own gate open for years before being saved from disappearing by Lucy. When Loke came close to disappearing from the world she did all she could to save him, even going as far as to defy and challenge the Celestial Spirit King himself, thus earning his respect and friendship as a result. She’s the first celestial mage to be invited to the celestial world by the Celestial Spirit King and, as far as my research tells me, the first to summon him.
From Lonely to Fairy

From the moment Lucy walked into the Fairy Tail guild the loneliness she once felt melted away like soft snow in the warming spring. The home she shared with her father was once warm and filled with joy but with the ing of her mother all of that changed. Their house grew cold and silent, their relationship became foreign and strange. Jude was no longer the doting father he once was. Now he was a business tyrant who expected his daughter to be perfect. Lucy’s life became an endless sea of loneliness, the happiness she once felt became nothing more than a fading memory. Finally she left the cage her father kept her in and decided to make her own way in life. She didn’t really have a plan but she did have a goal. Fairy Tail. Queue a chance encourage in the port town of Hargeon with a boy with pink hair on mission to find his father and his blue cat companion and Lucy’s life changes for the better. The deafening silence is filled with laughter and she’s surrounded by friends. Fairy Tail is more than a guild for her, it’s home and a family. For the first time she was surrounded by like minded people. In Levy she found someone who shares here love of books and writing, in Mirajane she found someone she can confide in when she needs advice, in Erza she found someone to help her realize her own strength, in Gray she found someone who she can rely on and relies on her, in Wendy she found someone she can treat like a younger sister, in Juvia she found someone who understands the loneliness she once felt and in Makarov she found someone who sees her as family. She wears her guild mark with pride because it doesn’t just represent her guild. It represents the person she once was, the struggles she overcame and the person she is now. Lucy has let go of the past and marches to the beat of the stars with her fellow guild mates.
Strength Comes in Many Forms

Although we love to call our celestial princess…well princess she is far from a damsel in distress. While it’s true Natsu often comes to her rescue there are very few times she sits there and does nothing. Aside from her physical and magical strength, I’m going to focus on her mental strength. Her mental strength makes it’s first appearance when she goes home to face her father and tells him that she’s found a home in Fairy Tail and nothing he does will change that. She breaks free of the mental chains of being the perfect daughter that trapped her for so long. It wasn’t easy to leave her life behind but she walked with her head held high regardless of the sorrow she felt leaving her only flesh and blood behind. During the S-Class trails on Tenrou Island while fighting of Grimoire Heart Natsu, trapped under a minor landslide, told Lucy to leave him there and get somewhere safe and she refuses to go. Her spine is being stamped on like it’s a trampoline and her skull is almost crushed yet our girl smiles. She smiles. I think this is the moment she decided that she wasn’t going to rely on someone to come save her and her confidence in her own strength grew. It would’ve been easy for her to listen and make a run for it but she didn’t. One of her biggest feats of mental strength doesn’t actually come from our Lucy but rather her future self. Future Lucy saw the destruction of her timeline, the death of her friends and watched her world burn. She made the choice to travel through the Eclipse Gate to try and change their fate knowing she’d see them all again with the knowledge of what may happen to them. No amount of mental preparation can truly prepare you for something like that yet she know it was the only way to set things right. Although this choice cost her her life, it was a sacrifice she was willing to make. Fast forward to the appearance of E.N.D and we see Lucy what even Zeref deemed impossible. She rewrote the book of E.N.D saving Natsu’s life and put her own at risk. Again we see Lucy is mental prepared to put her life on the line for the sake of her friends. She’s willing to risk it all for those she loves.
The Princess and The Dragon

What? Did you really think Natsu wasn’t going to get his own section in this thing? He’s kinda important to the story y’know. Whether it was fate, destiny or a coincidence, Natsu and Lucy meeting set everything into motion. Their bond is something special and to understand why we need to shift our focus to our beloved reckless dragon, Natsu. We know that before he met Lucy Natsu primarily worked alone, occasionally going on jobs with childhood friend Lisanna but other than Happy no one ever really accompanied him. He kept everyone at arms length and that surprisingly included Lisanna. Although he ed the guild as a child, found and raised Happy with Lisanna and considers everyone in the guild his family, Natsu never really allowed anyone to get too close. Until he met Lucy. Something about her was different. She didn’t question it when he said his father, Igneel, was a dragon. Actually she only questioned why he thought a dragon would show up in the middle of town. She’s the first one he’s ever brought back to the guild and immediately formed a team with her shocking everyone. Even after Lisanna returned from Edolas, he remained by Lucy’s side. We’ve seen throughout the series that Lucy is the only one who can calm Natsu down when he’s about to commit homicide. Don’t lie, we all know he’d do it if Lucy and Erza weren’t there. His priority is to protect Lucy and I think this stems back to him ing the pain he felt after losing Lisanna but he understands that if he were to lose Lucy it would be so much worse given how close they are. Right from the get go Lucy put her trust in him and that strengthened their bond. We’ve seen both with future Lucy’s death and Natsu’s….run in with a dragon in the Dragon Cry film, we’ll question its cannonicity later, his memories of Lucy are radiant. She is practically glowing while the others appear just as we see them. They refuse to leave each other even when their lives are in danger. The dragon protects his princess and the princess protects her dragon in return.
Perfectly Imperfect : The Conclusion

One of the things I love most about Lucy is the fact that she isn’t perfect. Mashima could have easily written her to be a flawless character with the brains, beauty, highly skilled magic who pulls off impossible feats like counting a battle even after all of her bones were broken, you know who I’m talking about, but he didn’t. He made her imperfect. She had so little confidence in her magic that she relied on her looks to get her out of fights. She’s incredibly intelligent yet she has some serious blonde moments. She’s optimistic and cheerful and yet we see her break down and lose hope. We see her defeated, run out of magic power in the middle of a battle and feel helpless. She’s realistic. She acknowledges she has flaws and tried to better herself. She understands she may not be as strong as the others on her team but still does everything she can to help them. Broken down into its simplest form of phrasing it, Lucy is someone who wanted more from life and worked to achieve her dreams. She was willing to put the work in and take chances to get to where she is now. So, what have we learned? Lucy is an imperfectly perfect character who is way more relatable than people want to it and just because life deals you a bad hand, doesn’t mean you can’t use it to your advantage.
