Fiena looked out the window eagerly, anticipating a friend's arrival. Her parents were in the living room, quietly discussing their meeting with the Number Two hero in all of Japan. When her eyes spotted a familiar vehicle stop along the road outside the large house, she dashed to the door, willing her parents to come and greet Endeavor. Sure enough, they soon took notice of her excitement and strolled over to open the door. "Freiya, Akahito," Endeavor greeted them as he approached the door. Young Shoto stood behind him, looking a little sad. Did he not want to see Fiena?
"The meeting room is all prepared," Fiena's father informed the pro hero. "Please, come inside." The couple stood back to allow the hulking form of the fiery hero into their abode.
As Endeavor stepped in, he looked pointedly at Shoto, then looked Fiena up and down. "I trust you've trained your quirk?" he asked her. She nodded eagerly. "Good, Shoto needs a training partner who's growing stronger as well. You can go outside and start training. I'll get Shoto once the meeting finishes." Without another word, the three adults disappeared into a large room, closing and locking the door behind them.
With them gone, Fiena looked at Shoto with a goofy grin. "Sean said he'll keep watch while we play. He'll tell us if Endeavor is coming to check on us," she informed him.
Shoto's eyes looked over to the door the adults had just disappeared through, then back to the only friend he had. "It won't work. Last time, he noticed I wasn't injured at all, and learned we didn't train," he told her. "He wasn't happy about that."
Fiena frowned, knowing that Shoto was punished. "What if we played with our quirks? Yeah, it'll hurt a bit, but so will training! And at least playing is fun."
"Do you think that will work?" Shoto asked. "What would we do?"
"Tag, but it also counts if we hit each other with our quirks," Fiena suggested. With that, she raised her arm as if she was going to rest her hand on his shoulder. Instead, a small bolt of lightning, like one would see in a plasma ball, connected her hand to his shoulder. With a coy smile, she announced, "You're it!"

The one thing about getting in on recommendations is not knowing anything about your other potential classmates. While everybody else went through a different entrance exam and got to see the other contestants in action, Shoto only knew of Yaoyorozu, Honenuki, Yoarashi, and Tokage's quirks, and he wasn't even sure who all would be accepted. So when he opened up the door to his homeroom, he didn't know what to expect.
He had arrived early. The class was mostly empty, save for a man with dark blue hair and uncomfortable-looking calves, a man with black hair and equally uncomfortable-looking elbows, an invisible girl, and Yaoyorozu. The man with dark blue hair approached him eagerly, introducing himself as Tenya Iida. Shoto only offered his name before taking a seat at a desk, wanting to avoid Iida's excitable conversation. He watched his classmates come in one at a time. A girl with pink skin and horns. A girl with long green hair tied in a bow. A man with several arms connected by a flap of skin that resembled the webbing in frog's feet.
He was not expecting to recognize the next person who came in. A young woman with long purple hair separated into pigtails. She had a genuine smile on her face. Wait, no...it wasn't natural. If he had never seen her real genuine smile, he never would have noticed, but it was a forced expression. He didn't know how to react as Fiena took a seat up front without seeing him. Should he say hi? They hadn't spoken in years.
He lost all interest in observing his other classmates. He stared at the back of Fiena's head, considering what he should do. She must have sensed it, for she glanced over her shoulder briefly. A couple of seconds ed before she performed a double-take, realizing she recognized the boy. Her confused expression returned to a smile, this one more genuine. She gracefully got out of her desk and approached his. "Shoto, is that you?" she asked. "I should have known you'd get into U.A."
There was something off about her greeting. It was too formal, too polite. He knew they hadn't spoken for a while, but Fiena was always really energetic. Even if they had only separated for a day, she'd be overjoyed whenever Endeavor brought Shoto over. But now, she sat at the desk in front of him, awaiting his response. She didn't have the same energy. "Yeah, it's nice to see you too, Fiena," he said, a little more monotone than he meant. He didn't want to sound insincere. Fiena was one of the few children Endeavor allowed him to hang out with during meetings with her parents, who manufactured his items. "You didn't apply for the course?"
She tilted her head slightly as she thought. He noticed her eyes were unfocused as if she wasn't entirely in the moment. She wasn't high, right? "I'm not the best builder," she shrugged. "I know it's the family company and all, but I think hero work is more suited to me. Mom and dad it. How have you been? Is Endeavor still as abusive?"
Shoto blinked in shock. She said it so casually, but he could hear the malice laced in his name. She had always known Endeavor's tendency to get violent when upset, but she had never addressed it so bluntly. "I..." he fumbled for the words. "I don't let him anymore. I refuse even to use my flames. I'm in control of my life now. What about you?"
"I've been perfectly fine," Fiena replied almost too quickly. Even though her smile only spread more extensively, Shoto filled with more doubt. That was a lie. Something must have happened to make her like this. He had intended to carry on the conversation, but they were interrupted by the arrival of another student. A boy with green hair had entered the classroom. He was plain-looking, but for some reason, everybody was interested in him. Before Shoto knew what was happening, Fiena got up and walked over to greet the newcomer, ending any chance for Shoto to voice his concerns.

Shoto carried the tray of food around the cafeteria as he looked for the familiar head of purple hair. There were surprisingly many students with the same shade of hair as Fiena. Luckily, she was sitting near the rest of Class 1-A, so she wasn't difficult to spot. Her behavior earlier had worried Shoto more than he expected. He had been unable to pay much attention to Aizawa-sensei, continually looking at her to see if there were any physical hints. She hadn't just matured; if that were the case, her smile wouldn't be fake. Something was wrong with her, and he intended to figure out what it was.
He placed his plate next to hers, sitting down beside her. While they were surrounded by other students, they were all too engaged in their own conversations to accurately eavesdrop on theirs. "Fiena, what's wrong? You're acting strange," he got straight to the point.
"It's been two or three years," Fiena was quick to point out. "People change."
"No, you're not happy. I can tell," Shoto insisted. "I know your smile."
Fiena raised an eyebrow but didn't push the statement further. "It's not important. You've had way more traumatic experiences with your fami-"
"This isn't about me, it's about you," Shoto interrupted. "Please, you helped me avoid depression. If it weren't for you, I'd...I don't even know. I owe you my life, that's for sure. So please, tell me what's wrong."
Fiena's smile faltered, but she quickly recovered. "Don't talk like that. I promise you, you don't need to worry about me."
Shoto stared at her, at a loss for words. He felt a lump form in his throat. She didn't want to tell him. Did she not trust him? He swallowed it down, knowing it was unacceptable to show weakness in front of so many people. He allowed the sadness to be replaced with anger. "Fiena, please," he said, more forcefully. "I know how you are. You worry about everybody else and refuse to help yourself. What kind of friend would I be if I didn't help? You're the only one who I've..."
Fiena froze, looking over at Shoto. She was waiting for him to finish his sentence, but he couldn't. He didn't know how to. He didn't know how to say what he wanted to say. Apparently, he didn't need to speak anymore. Even though Fiena still had her smile, tears were running down her face. She silently leaned into Shoto, folding in on herself as she cried. She whispered words that only he could hear. "Zein is dead."
Zein...he had died shortly before Endeavor forbid Shoto from interacting with Fiena again. He was Fiena's six-year-old brother, at the time. He knew she loved him, but the fact his death still haunted her...she hadn't dealt with this grief in years. Nobody was there for her to cry to. All because Shoto allowed his father to control his life. If Shoto had rebelled sooner, could he have been there to help Fiena grieve?
He noticed the table looking at the two of them inquisitively. Upon seeing Fiena crying, the majority of them quickly looked away. Some of the girls continued staring anyway, clearly pitying her. He doubted she would appreciate this. He helped her to her feet and escorted her to the hallway. No words were exchanged. Fiena simply cried into Shoto's chest as they knelt on the floor. He had to say something. But what?
He wrapped his arms around her in an awkward hug. The only thing he could think of to say was, "It's okay, I won't leave you. How can I leave the only one I've ever cared about?"
