Winter 15-21

Well, I found out what the junimos fixed, and it has opened a world of opportunity.

Monday morning, as I was ing by the bus station, I noticed Pam waiting in front of the bus. Apparently, she used to be the driver of the bus to Calico Desert, which had been broken down for a long time. However, to her surprise (and mine as well), it had been repaired seemingly overnight!

Ah, well, I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. I have a feeling I know just the mysterious circumstances that led to the bus’ repair.

Since then, the bus has been available every day to offer rides in and out of Calico Desert, which is a good ways away from town. Obviously, I had to take a trip there; I’d never been before!

Well, for one thing, I was unprepared for a desert climate. I stashed my winter gear, but I was still wearing a pretty heavy hoodie. Still, I was glad for a little heat, especially after the winter we’ve had back home.

There were all sorts of things at the desert. A trading stand, tons of neat forage, an odd locked cave…

Plus, a super cute shop called the oasis, with a shopkeeper I’d been waiting to meet. Sandy, aka the friend from the desert Emily’s been telling me all about, was just as excited to meet me as I was to meet her. Apparently in their back-and-forth writings, Emily had told her all about me, enough so that she recognized who I was before I even introduced myself.

Needless to say, I love her! I hope she visits the valley sometime, or maybe Emily and I can visit the desert together, because I’d love for the three of us to spend a day together.

The first few evenings of this week were set aside for the annual night market. A handful of boats from all corners of the Gem Sea met up at the beach, carrying their wares. There were all sorts of things to choose from— I even bought a ton of seeds early! Man, I can’t wait for spring.

The highlight, though, was the submarine tour. Once I was aboard, the captain took the sub deep underwater, and he opened up a big hole in the floor for some deep sea fishing.

It’s a good thing I’d thought to bring my pole, because there were all sorts of weird deep sea fish there! Midnight squids, super cucumbers, blobfish… so many weird and wonderful varieties! They were all very valuable to sell, too. I actually made profit, compared to what I paid for the tour.

Speaking of fishing, this week I resolved to catch this season’s legendary fish: the elusive glacierfish. I’d read up on it in the library, so I knew exactly where and when to find it. Tuesday afternoon I took my pole and all the bait I could carry down to the forest river.

Oh, glacierfish. Ohhhhhh glacierfish.

Yeah, I didn’t catch it Tuesday. I hooked it several times, but I lost it every single time. I ended up burning through all my bait! It was like that stupid thing was taunting me.

Wednesday morning I refreshed my bait and went back down. I brought plenty of food with me, as well as a blanket to wrap myself in. I was ready to camp out.

Well, after several unsuccessful attempts, I finally managed to catch it!

I may have gloated a little afterward. To the… fish.

I may be losing it.

Anyway, while we’re talking about fish, I also finally completed the fish tank in the community center!

It really looks nice. Though… I’m wondering what the junimos did with all of those fish…

Anyway, following that completion, I found Willy by the mountains the next morning. There had been a gigantic boulder blocking a stream coming out of the mountain, and that morning it was gone.

Willy was perplexed, but also quite excited, because that mountain stream was carrying ore with it. He even gave me a pan I could use to pan for minerals and stuff. So that’s really cool!

I’m a little loaded with ore at the moment, though. I’ve been mining like crazy these past few weeks, and yesterday I made it to the bottom of the mines!

At the bottom was a chest, and it held a large key with a skull shape.

There weren’t any clues as to what the key was for, so I guess my next move is to investigate. Can’t wait to find out what treasures it’ll unlock!
