Maddie was never the outdoorsy type. In fact, before moving to Pelican Town, there’s absolutely no way she ever could have imagined living on a farm. So when she finally decided to open that letter after her grandfather’s ing, she was equally confused and conflicted. Should she carry on the farming legacy her grandfather had obviously wished for her, or should she continue living comfortably, but wasting away in a Joja office job?

After plenty of deliberation, she decided on the former. And now, years later, she realizes that was probably one of the best decisions she had ever made.

”Oh, you know you can’t get rid of me that easily.”

Appearance: 5’6” in height. Fair complexion, short wavy brown hair, dark brown eyes, bright red glasses. Usually wearing comfortable clothing— overalls when she’s working, hoodies or t-shirts when she’s relaxing.

A natural introvert, assimilation into such a close-knit community was a daunting task for Maddie. However, making friends proved to be much easier than she had expected. Mayor Lewis, an old friend of her grandfather’s, was friendly right off the bat, and helped introduce her to some others in the town. She also became fast friends with a few others her age, particularly Emily, Leah, and Elliott.

It wasn’t long at all before she was on a first-name basis with all her neighbors, and barely longer before she called them her friends.

• Hobbies/interests: farming and foraging, gaming, writing, reading

As the years , Maddie continues to grow in her relationships and skills. She’s on her way to becoming a well-rounded farmer and Pelican Town citizen, and she couldn’t be happier.

”I’m learning I’ve got a knack for some of this stuff. Too bad I didn’t start earlier!”

Close relationships

• Claire: her younger sister, who lives back in the city. Spends lots of time with her whenever she visits home. They call and video chat quite often.

• Emily: one of her first friends in town, who quickly became her best friend. They talk for hours on slow saloon nights.

• Abigail: a close friend. Once they discovered they shared a love of gaming, rainy days, and getting way too competitive at an egg hunt for children, the rest followed naturally. They love to meet up at the saloon on Friday nights and make fun of Sam as he fails at pool time and time again.

• Leah: another close friend. They became friends over a shared love of foraging and exploring. She helped Maddie start to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors even more. They hang out in her cabin often.

• Elliott: another good friend. A fellow writer, they like to encourage each other’s projects and share writing tips, as well as book recommendations. Maddie often s he and Leah in the saloon.

• Shane: a very close friend, and her eventual husband. What started as Maddie occasionally checking in on him and chatting at the saloon turned into a routine of walking together, talking together, and spending a great deal of time together. The rest is history…

• Marnie: as fellow business owners and animal lovers, they became friends rather quickly. She helps teach Maddie about taking care of farm animals, and in turn, Maddie provides her own tips about food, plants, and forage. Marnie often invites Maddie to her and Jas during festivals, and after her marriage to Shane, Marnie is more than happy to call her part of the family.

”I’m happy here. For once, I’m really, truly happy.”
