EMERALD’S ODYSSEY

Author’s note: Another long long hiatus has come to an end for me, and now I think I'm finally motivated to actually try and finish this fanfic, well. Let's not wait! I hope you all enjoy. Once again, thank you all for being such ive people over this work! Here's the background music for this entire chapter if you wanna hear that.
Chapter 5: The Calm Before The Storm.
”this box shouldn't be this heavy-” Emerald blurted out as he was struggling to carry a rather very large computer module by himself. It'd only been about three or four hours or so and they were getting close to finishing up with the packing. Although Emerald was definitely trying to keep his enthusiasm up by working himself harder for everyone, but man would he be lying if he wasn't being pushed to his limit; Even funnier? He hasn't asked for help even though his teammates definitely would have. Soon enough, lights had started turning on around their little landing compound. With it now being the equivalent of nighttime on planet Epsilon, the now reddish-brown colored plants and grass around the area were seemingly in full view. Emerald always wondered why everything seemingly started slowly changing to be browner and browner in shades as the last year or so had progressed. Maybe it had to do with the seasons of the planet? Who knows, he wouldn't be here for much longer anyways.
”...you should probably set that down for a second sir. Your knees are starting to buckle-” Minty’s voice could be heard from behind him, which effectively caused the Emerald to flinch and nearly drop the rather heavy tech onto his feet. That would have NOT been very awesome.
”Y-yeah. You're right.” Emerald replied as he very safely placed the rather large box down, soon turning to his close friend and giving a rather tired but enthusiastic smile. Minty responded with her own smile. Thank god she could act, it almost hurt smiling when she knew what was coming soon.
Emerald soon noticed her smile was a bit off, as he soon walked over and lightly placed his hand on her shoulder. “Hey, we're gonna get through this alright? I know the war is gonna be scary. But we're gems, we're made for this. At least I think we are-” he stifled a small chuckle, he assumed she was upset or afraid about going to war. So close, yet so far.
Minty then gave a small nod as she seemingly moved forward and pulled emerald into a rather tight hug. “Thank you… Emerald.” She said with a bit of her fear seemingly dropping from her voice. This was… New? I mean, they both weren't afraid of forms of attachment like hugging, I mean. They were best friends and spent almost every single minute of life together with each other. But minty was definitely off. She wasn't usually this afraid of combat. Maybe it was the sheer size of it? I mean, a planetary insurrection hasn't happened on this scale in centuries, maybe even eons. Usually it was just a singular kindergarten going rogue from what he knew of?
Emerald soon snapped back to reality with a rather dark green flushed face as he realized they were still hugging… In front of the others while they were still working.
Minty seemed to also notice this as she had soon enough let go, seemingly her already obsidian colored skin had flushed in the face too, going to almost a midnight black color in shading. After a few seconds of awkward silence, Emerald spoke up.
”...Wanna take a break? The others can finish packing up for us.” Emerald asked, deciding to abuse his technical high ranking abilities one last time. as she gave a light nod towards him, she soon looked over back towards their base. “...let's go up there.” She pointed upwards to the top of the mountain that their base resided in.
”...sounds like a plan to me. RACE YA THERE!” the green skinned gem yelled out as he dashed forwards. Causing minty to flinch and then pause for a moment as she watched him run ahead with enthusiasm… If she had a heart? It would be skipping beats right now. She then just decided to calm down and enjoy this moment with him, as she quickly raced behind him to scale up the side of this rather gigantic mountain that they called home for the last year or so.
Soon enough, the two had made it to the top at about the same time or so. Even though Emerald wasn't exactly the best fighter. He sure as heck was good at acrobatics and movement in general! Minty lightly punched his arm with a happy expression. “You're really really fast, y'know that?” She said with a happy expression as Emerald gave a smile and a nod. “Says the fastest pearl in the empire-” he complimented back as minty seemingly blushed. The two then looked over towards the side and looked over towards the dark horizon of the sky. It was a beautiful galaxy-like sky with the beautiful red colors still being able to pop out very beautifully in all of the nature and life around the planet.
They hadn't been up here before, it was astounding to say the least. As the two sat atop the mountain, Minty seemingly moved closer to him. Soon enough? Her head was resting upon his shoulder. This moment; it felt like time had stopped between the two of them as they stared into the great beyond in their futures. Although minty soon broke that pause and spoke up. “Emerald. There's something I wanna tell you…” The green gem paused as he looked over to her slightly, her head now off his shoulder, although her arm was around it instead. “I…” The words got stuck in her mouth, she couldn't say it. It was as if she had lost her ability to speak entirely. She couldn't do what she wanted to, no matter how hard she tried. It would break her to say it knowing what was coming.
”I…I'm so proud of how far you've come. Even though you have such a long way to go when it comes to your potential… you still are the best gem I could've ever met. And it's been an honor being your pearl.” Emerald was left speechless, as his own face was clearly flushed green from the compliment and iration. It always did leave him speechless when she was so much more open with him. The words finally came out of Emerald’s own mouth as she smiled and pulled her into a close knit hug.
“I… I'm so glad I have you with me at my side. You're the best gem I've ever met in my entire existence. Please know that I'll always be here for you when you need me. I mean, we're gonna be unstoppable aren't we?” He said with a warm smile, as that smile felt like it could shatter Minty’s gem at any moment. She then spoke up quickly”I-I just forgot something-!” she said nervously as she just stood up just as fast. “I think I left the injectors off back at the Alpha colony… are you able to run back over there and turn them on? I-I’m so sorry for forgetting that-” she said with an obviously nervous sound in her voice. As Emerald soon paused before finally standing up. “Don't worry Minty. I've got it! I'll be back in a flash, alright?” Emerald said as he quickly hugged her again for a moment before letting go,
Minty didn't hug back this time, as it was a bit of a fast hug. But as soon as he had let go and had started making his way back down the mountain and out of view… the tears had finally broken. She hated this, she hated ALL of this. But it was the necessary thing to do to keep him alive. She couldn't let him die, she cared too much about him. She’ll do the fighting to keep him safe. Little did both of these gems know. But this was the last time they would ever see each other within the next five thousand years.
