Do you ?

When were they invented?

Dragons are probably the oldest mythical creature to ever appear in our world. Researches show traces of beliefs regarding dragons that date back to the first civilizations or even to the paleolithic era. That makes it very hard to know when they were invented, but we do know that it was way before the year 0, so B.C. I think that it's good enough to know that this is an old creature, and that every generation heard of it at least once.

Where do the stories come from?

When you track down the various stories and analyze them, and where they're from, using various statistics tools, we can assume that dragons first appeared in Africa. It is believed that it then traveled to Asia, then Australia, then America and finally Europe.

Inspiration

It is obvious that the first civilizations invented the dragons by observing large reptiles surrounding them, since the first dragon to ever exist had scales, horns, fur and could fly. They probably looked at Crocodiles or other reptiles to blend them, and add a little fantasy to it. We could think that they were invented after dinosaurs, but the first humans didn't live with them, unlike some beliefs, and they surely didn't have the scientific knowledge to find the bones and assemble them and imagine what a dinosaur would look like. It is then impossible to say that dragons were invented after dinosaurs.

Appearance

The first dragon features were a little different than what we know them as today, but it's still highly similar. The dragon was part serpent and lived mostly near water. It would appear when the sun and rain would meet, and it could fly. As I've stated, this ancient type of dragon also had human hair, such as a pinch or beard, hair on the side of his face, which could explain why the Chinese dragons have a fluffy face. They also have scales and horns. Note that the concept of fire was not a part of it yet. The dragon had the ability to provoke tornadoes and floods.

Ancient stories

The dragons were not a part of literature yet, since the concept of writing was not introduced when the creature appeared. They were mostly drawn, painted or sculpted. China is the only place who always thought highly of the beast, and kept the main features of the origins. The chinese dragon is wavy, almost serpent like, which is closer to the ancient representation of dragons. Also, the Chinese dragon stayed close to water and could be seen there or in the clouds. The dragon also was first talked about in greek literature. The story was not about it, but Agamemnon had a blue dragon design on his belt.

Guardians

In most stories, dragons are there to guard an object that is precious to their eyes, or protecting a God's possession. Dragons are said to be guardians, and they would do anything to protect it, which is why they can be so aggressive and scary.

Fights

During fights, the dragon is almost indestructible. Only special equipment can defeat them, such as a special sword. Dragons possess human-like qualities, so it is possible to talk them through to resonate them, or at least try to negotiate.

Supernatural abilities

In many myths, dragons have supernatural abilities. Most of them are like to water, since the original dragon was linked to water. Dragons can fly, but that's just a regular ability that is linked to their morphology.

Breath

Dragons have a special breath, in most stories. It's not always fire, though. For some dragons, it's ice, water, air, poison, etc. But whenever they blow, you can except something to come out.

Blood

You can hear in many stories that dragon blood does something important if you drink it, or by being a descendant of a dragon. You gain power and strength. There's also so swords that are forged in dragon blood, and these are the only equipment able to kill a dragon, in some myths.

:fire: The word dragon comes from many words, but mainly from the Latin word "drakonem" which means large or huge serpent.

:fire: Chinese dragons are friends with humans, while Europian ones are aggressive and their breath is fire.

:fire: Three types of Chinese dragons : The lung (sky dragon), kiau (marsh dragon) and li (sea dragon).

:fire: Four types of Greek dragons : Dracones (the serpent), Cetea (sea dragon), Dracaenae (Female dragon) and Chimera (fire-breathing dragon).

:fire: There is actual dragons that exist, which are the Komodo dragon and the Thorny devil lizard. They obviously don't breathe fire, though.
