I posted the collection back in March. But for this challenge, I’ll write about what started it all.
Many, many moons ago, I was in a Barnes & Noble store looking at… books! While waiting for the checkout line to shorten, I wandered over to the front of the store, where they sell various non-book items. Among the paraphernalia were these bookends:

I didn’t buy them immediately, but I was intrigued that someone had gone to the trouble of making Lord of the Rings-themed bookends. They were quite attractive and rather elaborate, with lots of detail.

The line shortened, I bought my books and magazines, and went on my merry way.
As the week went by, my thoughts would occasionally drift back to the bookends. They were truly beautiful. Even though they were static—a moment frozen in time—they somehow made the words in that age come alive.
Since I like to collect things, I thought it would be nice to buy those bookends and purchase a few J.R.R. Tolkien books to put on display. It seemed like a small, pleasant diversion from everyday life. Boy, oh boy—I had no idea what I was getting into!
Like most collectors, I have a genuine interest in what I collect. Although I had read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings many years ago and enjoyed them, that was about the extent of it.
However, once I began my search, I was astounded by the immensity of Tolkien’s writings! Tens of thousands of words—stories, poems, even his notes—were incredible. I now understand why it took one of his son, Christopher Tolkien, a lifetime to assemble all the various stories into a comprehensible, multi-volume collection of amazing literature.
He was a man of immense intellect and great ion.
